Guest guest Posted April 27, 2003 Report Share Posted April 27, 2003 Well after I sent my e-mail out Saturday I sat here listening to my daughter cry and moan, my frustration building till I started crying. Of course I went up stairs I didn't want her feeling any worse than she already was. The more I cried the angier I got, and then she started screaming. Seems her little brother got to ruff nad kneed her in the stomach. Well that was it. Someone somewhere was gonna treat her pain or I was gonna go to jail trying to get her treatment. I told her to get dressed and off we headed to the ER. The trip though short was quite painfull for her. Too many potholes still left from winter. We get there and 1st we see triage(SP) nurse. I tell her we are here to get her treated for pain, she has CP and noone will deal with her pain. She says she doesn't understand. I say well understand this when my 12 year old tells me " mommy if I were dead I wouldn't hurt anymore " I have a problem. So she says oh she's her cause she suicidial. I again said no she's here for pain, that was just a passing comment. Well I guess it was enough to get her moved up quite a bit, the ER was packed and she went in ahead of everyone. Then we luck out, 1st her nurse is also named Cassandra and she too has CP. So the 2 of them hit it off right away. Then instead of a DR we get a PA. I'm thinking oh-no - another idiot to educate. But no, hes appaulled noone is treating her pain. I tell him about Fridays visit to her PCP's office and how on Saturday they tell me levels are normal, just watch her. He says ok let's deal with this. Looks at Friday's labs says everything is ok no need for IV. Then says since she's got SPINK1 she's been having problems all her life - her levels won't elevate every time she has an attack, I'm not going to draw blood again. Great relief for Cassie. Then tells her he's going to give her pain meds orally, he wants her to wait 1 hr there at ER, if no relief then he'll give her meds via IV. So 2 Vicodin and 1 hour later she's doing much better. Sends us home with 4 more Vicodin to get her threw till pharmacy opens. Plus we get a prescription for 20 and 1 refill. He also said that when they send notes over to DR's office he will have the attending DR in ER send note regarding her untreated pain. He says she's going threw enough BS having CP - doesn't need pain on top of it. Then her really surprized both of us. He gave her a big hug, told her anytime she needed help to come in and ask for him, he'd be there for her. then her nurse told her when she works she'll make sure to watch for her name. Cassie cried again, this time happy tears. So... sunday was much better for her. She wants to try to go to school today and knows she has to without pain meds. As much as I wnat to say no I'm going to let her go - more than likely she won't be there all day anyway -she has to have follow-up with PCP. I have a feeling this is going to be a difficult appointment today. I haven't really slept more than 2 hours at a time since Wednesday. so I'm beat. thanks so much everyone for your words of encouragement, they really did help. I pray for everyone in this group every night, but I say special prayers for the children with this disease. I have a hard enough time dealing with CP at the age of 29 and can't imagine doing it as a child. I hope that Cassie finds a good doctor and soon! Sending lots of happy thoughts your way... Guest guest Posted April 28, 2003 Report Share Posted April 28, 2003 Patty, I'm SO glad to hear that Cassie got a wonderful doctor and nurse in the ER! And something to ease her pain. It just horrifies me and everyone in this group that no one was giving her relief for her pain. Definitely keep their names for any other times Cassie goes to the ER. Hopefully, something can be done with her PCP to help get her pain meds in the future for other attacks. At least Cassie is feeling well enough to try going to school. I just wish we could all connect with them more. I am so glad that you shared this because we all need to hear good outcomes more often. I wish I could have seen Cassie's face!
