Guest guest
Jeannine, Please understand that my word of caution was not meant to prohibit diabetics like you from utilizing Bernstein's diet. It's wonderful that you have lost this weight and the diet is working so well for you. It's designed for type 2's who are generally overweight to start, and obviously it's proven beneficial for your type of situation. Yet if you're getting 100-130 carbs a day, you're really not doing his total restricted diet, which is no more than 30 carbs. That's what the DNE said would be unhealthy for a type 1 like me. You're doing what's considered a " moderate " application, and actually, that is what I'm following too. My goal is 100 carbs per day, which works well for me since I still get to have small portions of those things I love like potatos, pasta, rice, some fruit or pumperknickle bread. It seems that these complex carbs are just enough to help me to gain weight...yipee, yipee! Fortunately I've never had much of a sweet tooth except for ice cream, so I've been able to pass by all those bakery delights without remorse. But wouldn't you know it, that craving for ice cream hits and giving in to that urge takes me over my 100 gram limit every night....the ice cream is 21 carbs! A " moderate " carb diet is something I could live with the rest of my life, but I know that the true Bernstein diet of no more than 30 carbs would be something I would tire of quickly and not be able to stay with. The key is to find the right regimen you can live with and adhere to without feeling restricted and deprived. Since I started my new insulin (Humalog), I've had great BG's and I'm so happy that this new regimen seems to be working. And two nights without hypo's....that, in itself, is such a relief. I'm glad this has been working out so well for you. Keep up the great progress. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina Southeastern Representative PAI, Intl. I am type 2 and at the time of diagnosis (10 weeks ago) needed to lose about 35 pounds...I have lost 15 of them so far. My " low carb " diet is about 100-130 a day...considering it was nothing for me to eat hundreds and hundreds of carbs a day (or at one sitting !)...and that I was a sugar/carb addict...what I am doing is very healthy for me...small amounts of meat, small amounts of carbs and heavy on the vegetables. I have given up nearly all junk food: candy, cakes, pies, cookies... no waffles, no pancakes, no blueberry muffins...no potatoes, no rice and very limited amounts of pasta....no ice cream sigh>...no sweet rolls or danishes...no potato chips...you get the idea. I have been mostly successful in bringing my sugar under control...and I think you will have better luck when you can get your routine established....
