Hi Everyone,

Sorry I haven't posted lately, been having terrible pain days.

Welcome to all the new members, this is a wonderful board, filled

with great info.

I found out the name of the surgery I will be having on the 14th--

open sphincteroplasty. I'll be leaving tomorrow to meet with the

surgeon and then have an ERCP on Thursday. Dr Hawes at MUSC will do

the ERCP and DR. will do the surgery.

I would love to hear from any one who has this surgery. I'm making a

list of questions to ask the Dr. Please share with me what I can

expect from hopsital stay to the incison. I really want to know if

this helped anyone!!!

I had this surgery in 1989 up in St Louis and it is a pretty serious

surgery. It depends on how difficult a time they have in finding and

opening the duct. I did have quite a bit of pain right after the

surgery in recovery, but they were very good at getting it under

control as quickly as they could. I had an NG tube for about 3 days

and it took awhile to be able to tolerate liquids without nausea. But

the doc told me he had a really hard time finding the duct and

getting to it. It took awhile to totally recover, but I was basically

without symptoms or acute attacks for almost a year and a half. All

the problems after that were related to the chronic damage, and not

the duct. It has only closed off again one other time 6 years after

the initial surgery. So I guess what I'm saying is, the surgery and

recovery are rough, but the results are usually long lasting.

I writing to let you know that I had the surgery in April of 92 at Cleveland

Clinic and the hospital stay was a good one. I wasonly in the hospital for

8 days and then I got to come home, which is 3 hours away. About the incision,

well I had my come open on the 12th day after surgery. So I went to my Local

hospital here and my GI doc meet me in the ER and he called my doc in Cleveland.

They said just keep it cover and it would heal up, no problem. In fact they

didn't even want to see me back to see how I was doing, at all. Well, my

incision did heal up but I did developed an incesional hernia from it, because

it was pack and let heal from the inside out. It healed from the outside in and

that cause the hernia, which I had to have surgery for in 93, where they put

mesh in me to hold together my abdominal wall. They I had to have more surgery

again in 94,just to open it up and put drains in to drain all the new fluid that

had collected inside of it. It wasn't as bad the second time around to have it

repaired. I want you to know that I have had 2 other major surgery a Whipple in

94 and a Gastric Outlet Obstruction in 96 and with both of these surgery my

incision came open and they pack them so they healed up the right way. So I

guess I just prone to this happen to me. I am very prone to Adhesion and scar

tissue developing so this is what happen to me when I had my Sphincteroplasty

done.

I only got relieve for 6 months before the scar tissue formed over the opening,

causing it to become blocked again. Please don't let this discourage you, as

I have heard from all lot of folks who have had this done and have very good

results with this. I hope my experience has discourage you. If I had to do

it all again, I would have it done, because the 6 months it was working, I was

pain-free. Good luck with your surgery and I'll keep you in my prayers that

it helps you all lot.
