Hi ,

welcome to the list! You and your hubby will find hundreds of people here to

show you that you are really not alone.

Grapefruit seed extract is a natural antibiotic. Some parents from Germany

use it with success, but I have not given it to my daughter yet.

Acetylcysteine is the generic name of Mucomyst. It's used either in inhaled

form as a mucolytic or orally to prevent intestinal blockages. Fiona takes

10 ml a day since her dx, it's part of the german CF standard treatment.

Peace

That rotten egg smell of Mucomyst is because N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)

is derived from cysteine, an amino acid.

Amino acids are protein building blocks; there are 22 known amino

acids, but cysteine is one of the few that contains sulfur. Sulfur

contributes to fat digestion. Also, the body also makes taurine from

cysteine, and taurine is necessary for proper fat absorption.

Sulfur amino acids (proteins) are found in meat, poultry, beans,

dairy products, eggs, garlic, onions, brussel sprouts, brocolli, kale

and many other foods.

So it's the sulfur that gives NAC that " rotten egg " smell. But rest

assured, the sulfur is a very good thing indeed! For those of you who

have ever ventured to Myaka State Park in south Florida and have

sampled the water from the water fountains and smelled that strong

rotten egg smell, you know you're drinking sulfur-rich water.

Hey Torsten,

What are you using to disguise the taste of the Mucomyst for Fiona? We

always use Coca-cola. (CF diets! Coco-cola for breakfast!!)
