I am finally recovering from an awful week with Mathieu. Last week he was

acting very funny....lethargic, laying on the tile floor exhausted after only 30

minutes of play. At one point he was clammy feeling acted like he was going to

faint after a 3 hour nap; nursed and then pepped back up alittle, but not to a

full 13 month old recovery.

Well, a few days later I took him in for a check-up on his ears, and a re-weigh

because he had dropped back down to 16 pounds inspite of his great appetite. The

Doc said he had a low grade (100.4) I was a little surprised because he didn't

appear or feel warm to me, but his behavior that week warranted something may be

coming on.

Well, that evening as usual it spiked to 102 recally; no surprise, but even at

102 he is usually running around the house still. I gave him Motrin and layed

him to bed at 7:00 PM. Not like him to not fuss while I lay him down. He woke

up at 11:00 PM almost vomiting I went into grab him and he was as red as a

lobster. His fever was 105!!! He was limp in my arms and I couldn't get him to

respond to me. I called my doc line and then called 911. (my hubby had gone to

the West Coast for a meeting)

After two ER visits (the first doc claimed it was fifth disease, but it

obviously wasn't) they finally did blood work on him. We are waiting for the

results. It may be Bacteremia. He has improved a little bit. The fevers are

not as high, and he is thankfully nursing well still. They gave him Rocephine

for the " possible " blood infection.

I had to delete all my emails. I hope all is well with everyone, I will keep

you all posted about results.

Hi Jay

I am so sorry you have to go through this. Make sure they are taking a lung

x-ray and checking the oxygen saturation. Do not take the line that it is

normal for kids to drop into the upper 80's while they sleep. Your child is

not old enough to have those kind of problems. If he does drop for a moment

and climbs back up quickly it is not concerning if he drops and hangs in the

low 90's and upper 80's I would say that is concerning. If the medical

personnel gives you a hard time about low saturation levels being ok ask

them if they would feel comfortable with their own children at the low

level. Most will back down at that point.

Ask them about double antibiotic coverage for gram pos and gram neg

organism's. Some are resistant to rocephine but, it is still a big gun to

use against organisms. Keep us informed.

If it looks like they need to intubate him I would say the earlier the

better so his body can rest and heal and fight this infection. This is

judged by how hard he has to work to keep his oxygen saturation up. You

would look at the rate of heart beats and how rapidly he is breathing.

He will not be able to eat safely breathing more than 40 times a minute.

Make sure you ask to find out how fast a normal heart beat should be and how

quickly they think he should be breathing.

If he ends up having pneumonia ask them about aspiration pneumonia because

it often starts this way. Call me if you have any questions any time of the

day or night. .
