Guest guest
Your MD needs to take better care of you than this. Is this your primary doc or your OB. You should be on multi vitamins, b-12 sublinguals,, 800 mcg folic acid daily and also a prenatal. if you can NOt tolerate the prenantals then get yourself some flinstones chewables and take a couple of those a day, even if it's 1 am and 1 pm. the sublingual b-12 melts under your tongue and is 1000mcg daily. The folic acid helps to prevent nueral birth defects. you really need to be careful you are not getting dehydrated. you may try sipping gingerale and e ating saltines to settle your stomach. Always worked for me, before and after surgery. Good Luck and make those docs listen to you, if they don't get a different one. While I can't speak about your personal experience...I can tell you that for us and our clients, having had WLS is absolutely a non issue. We discuss healthy diets and such - exactly like we would with any expectant mother. If you were throwing up everything you consumed...then we'd address that - just like we would any other expectant mother. Hyperemesis effects a variety of women, not just those who have had WLS. As for taking the vitamins...we wouldn't worry if you weren't taking your prenatals so long as you were 1. taking extra folic acid and iron the first trimester and 2. had a very healthy diet and we would encourage you to try to take a regular multivitamin if you could manage to... but every practice is different. For us..having had WLS is pretty much a non-issue. (until it comes to the GTT, which we do not give those who have had WLS). Guest guest
KIM BREATHE! If you are almost two years out you are probably getting a more normal absorption. Some women who go through pregnancy have all day sickness that ends. Keep hydrated and ask for blood tests to monitor your vitamin levels. Keep in touch with your surgeon and ask them if there are other vitamins you might be able to take -- maybe some without iron> Iron can irritate the stomach which may contribute to your sickness. mailto: dferguson@... Guest guest
Kim, In both my pre and post op pregnancies I suffered from EXTREME morning sickness the entire 9 months. I was not able to tolerate my prenatals at all. I took Flinstone vitamin, 2 a day and 3 every other day. Despite my horrible morning sickness I was able to tolerate those. That is awful for your OB to tell you not to worry about the vitamins. You need your vitamins. If you took 2 Flinstones, you will get 800mcg of Folic Acid, which is very important in preventing brith defects, especially at your stage in the pregnancy. Best Wishes and I really hope you feel better soon! Guest guest
> That is awful for your OB to tell you not to worry about the vitamins. > I had two perinatologists, 2 OBs and a midwife tell me my 2nd pregnancy that they were totally fine with me not taking my prenatals...better to eat healthy food and keep it in than to take a prenatal and be throwing everything up. With our clients, if they have a problem with prenatals we routinely tell them that it's not a big deal, don't stress over it, and offer alternatives. Obviously I would disagree with you that it's aweful for the OB to tell her that she doesn't have to take them...although he should talk to her more about her diet and see what/how she's eating (which OBs and perinatologists rarely seem to do with expectant mothers..just weigh them - hardly a mention about what/how they are eating) Soderblom CCCE CD(DONA) CLD Student Midwife - Mesa, AZ CAPPA Board of Directors Doula/CBE/Pregnancy/Birth Photography Owner: Birth Story Diaries - real births, real photos http://www.birthdiaries.com Owner: SouthwestDoulas.com
Guest guest
I must speak out here in regard to nutritional/vitamin/mineral issues during pregnancy. It's an absolute MUST that you take your vitamins!!!!!! I would be very concerned if my OB didn't follow through on his exam with some labs to check your status. Mine didn't. Every tooth I have decalcified- and many have broken in several pieces. Several thousand dollars/2 root canals and 2 pulled teeth later, I am *nearly* normal. In addition, my bones de-calcified. They hurt and ache. My iron levels plummeted after delivery and haven't returned to normal. Every bone I have hurts. All of this, and I took a prenatal and 2 Flintstones daily in addition to calcium, folic acid and extra vit C!! I was 3 (THREE) years post open RNY and was eating healthy, nutritious foods and milk products. I had an 18# weight gain and the baby (THANK GOD) is fine nutritionally, but don't let them tell you that vitamins DONT matter!! THEY DO!!! Please seek information and care elsewhere, where you and YOUR BABY will be cared for properly!! Sheila
Guest guest
OH! I left out one very important fact.... I HAD NO MORNING SICKNESS AND NO VOMITING AT ALL either to deplete my body of the vitamins/minerals it so desperately needed!!! =========================== > I must speak out here in regard to nutritional/vitamin/mineral issues during pregnancy. Guest guest
maybe just give it a couple more weeks....brand was deathly sick her first 3 months...but now...she eats everything...wait...as a matter of fact she's eating as we speak~!!! hahahaha...zofran worked wonders for her...maybe try chewable vitimins with an xtra folic acid pill...you want at least 800 mg. of folic acid a day...thatt is what is in prenats...hope this helps New here/is MD a dumbie? Hey all- Im about 3 months pregnant....and i have seen two docs...both of which minimized that notion that i has gastric bypass almost 2 yrs ago. Im sure its due to the fact that they arent very educated in it. the one I am seeing now gave me some samples prenatels....and that is all I am taking...I have had some really bad 'all day sickness',,,,and he says that if i cant tolerate the vitamin...not to worry about it...and just quit taking it. I feel scared that I am needed more than this. I am throwing up almost every meal and this has been going on for nearly a month now. I have tried 3 different anti-nausea meds including Zofran. I called my WLS surgeon and they blew me off too (it seems like this happens alot when are you over a year PO...and plus i live 8 hrs from my surgeon) Anyway...I am scared...I dont want my teeth to fall out! Guest guest
Hi Kim.... I am 15 weeks pregnant..and about 14 months post WLS... I have been extremely lucky because both my surgeon and my OB have been really supportive and helpful. I also found an ally in our WLS program co-ordinator..who, like me, was just a little under a year post-op when she found out she was expecting. What she told me is... Try different vitamins. I had a big problem with prescription pre natals...but now take an over the counter brand which has me taking two a day. I separate the dose...take them with crackers or toast, and lots of water or liquids..and seem to be just fine. She also said to make sure that you are still taking your regular vitamins...if you need them before the baby came to be, you most definitely need them now that your body is also supporting a baby's nutritional needs as well. She suggested I eat smaller and more frequent meals. (That was hard for me..it reminded me of my " grazing " days prior to surgery...) I got sick A LOT my first 12 weeks...in fact, the other other time I felt worse was right after my WLS. It has slowly (and thankfully!) lightened and now I get sick only when I do something stupid like drink too much after a meal...or eat too fast... If you start to feel " not right " ... run down... there are shots that are available (says my surgeon), but they try not to resort to that... Remember that YOU know your bopdy better than anyone..and whoever your doc is should pay attention to that!!!!! Best of luck..and please, keep us posted!!!!
