Guest guest Posted July 24, 2005 Report Share Posted July 24, 2005 Ann Marie, Glad you are home. I certainly agree with you on all accounts about being incarcerated. No sleep, etc, and procedures at all hours. I have even had attending physicians (senior staff physicians and dept heads, not residents or interns) come in at midnight for an extended consult--over an hour--though only the ones who are night owls do this. One even apologized to me later for coming in the middle of the night, though I had not complained. I was just glad to get that much of his time at any hour. As far as sleep, we have found it VERY worthwhile to get a private room and it hasn't cost us that much extra. In fact, my last hospitalization the doc arranged for a private room at no extra cost, though we didn't ask for that or even mention getting a private room. They know peace and quiet can be healing too. My PICC line placements were usually quick and easy, probably took less than 15 minutes, and no more painful than putting in a standard IV at which I am an old hand. Only once did they hit the side of the blood vessel in my chest when stringing in the long tube and that was a brief sharp pain. At our university hospital PICC lines are placed and maintained by highly-specialized IV teams of nurses who do this every day all day, never by a staff physician or even resident. I wouldn't trade those ladies for any doc when it comes to PICC lines! They know their stuff. As far as ongoing pain, I have never found a PICC line to be any more uncomfortable than a standard IV. It's the point of entry that can be uncomfortable, just as in an IV. One of my PICC lines was inserted right in the crook of my elbow and that one I hated. It left a big lumpy scar on the vein, but it was because of location and the irritation caused by bending my arm. Anyway, hope all goes well for you and that you can gain strength. Thanks a for updating Laurie and everyone on Malisa's situation. I heard that Malisa is the second case to go to the OR for her Hickman, she was scheduled to be the first but got pushed back to second. I am sure we will be getting an update from her soon. We were on different floors, but that didn't stop us from seeing each other and hanging out together. We did some pretty funny things but didn't get caught. One night we got locked out of the hospital and couldn't get back inside. We finally got back inside the hospital by using the Emergency Entrance. :-D Hope you are doing well too. Guest guest Posted July 25, 2005 Report Share Posted July 25, 2005 Thanks Laurie And yes it feels so good to be sleeping in my own bed. The procedure was easy and quick. I was all nervous but I believe that it was more of the unknown and mentally not quite sure what it would feel like, but it wasn't painful at all during the procedure, it was about 3 hours later that I started to feel the pain. It was then that the lidocane wore off!!! Malisa should be home by tomorrow if everything went well. I will know more tonight and I will let you know. I did have a small catastrophe and spilled part a jug of water on the kitcen floor so I grabbed the paper towels and threw them on the floor. My Grandson came to check on me and to see f I needed anything and I told him yes to please take out the sack of wet paper towels. It scared me when my temp got to 101.7 but I got it down enough to feel safe going to bed. They wanted to re-hospitalize me but I vetoed that idea as it's too much for my son to get up early and get home late by checking my mail, watering my flowers and taking care of my 18 year old cat with " colitis " ?
