Guest guest
Hi , We had the same problem with my son. I wish I had known, back then, that if the school system suggests private school that you can make them pay for it, because I would have insisted on it! athan, 's dad, is ADHD and ODD. He has always been interested in computers, and started playing on our Commodore 64 at age 3. He was fascinated! By the age of 5, he was able to program simple games for it. Keeping him occupied in Kindergarten wasn't too hard, but by the time he reached first grade, he was bored with it all. That only spelled trouble, when combined with his ADHD! Once athan was bored, he, of course, acted out, to occupy his time, becoming the class clown. Our major problem was, if it took a " normal " child 7-8 repetitions to catch onto a concept, athan would have it down in 1-2, especially in the areas of math, science, and reading! What was he supposed to do while the other kids caught up? We fought with the school system for years. At one point, I even insisted that they place him in the LD class, because at least there, they would have to teach him at HIS pace. The school system refused, saying they didn't have a teacher that could keep up with him. Over the years, his teachers found that giving him " special " projects to work on, helped him to keep his behavior acceptable. I totally agree with Jodi that school systems around the country don't do enough to promote education for our gifted kids! If I had known that the school system should have made more available, I would have fought even harder. This is definitely one arena where it is worth the fight! I hope you have better luck on your journey with Destiny. Let us know how it goes!
