First of all, I apologize if it came off that she was being a smart alec,

and if she was shame on her. To be on the polite defensive side for nurses,

and being a call back nurse, it can sometimes be difficult when your are on

call, especially if she was at home dealing with her own crisis with her

children (this is not an excuse, she should be able to handle her job and do

it well). Perhaps you spoke a little quickly expecting she would know what

RSS was. I never knew about RSS until I found the yahoo site. Next time

you talk to a nurse, just act like they are describing it to someone who

hasn't heard about Silver. If they still don't acknlowledge the

diagnosis, explain that it is a rare diagnosis (as you would family and

friends), and then very slowly say the words to them. If they reiterate

back that they know what it is, GREAT!!! :) Working in a pediatircians

clinic, often nurses get so wrapped up in daily immmunizaitons and common

illnesses, that they do not see the rare cases often.

This is meant to be positive feedback, I don't mean to offend you. I hope

your baby is feeling better.

Hey all-

Just needed to vent. My son has not been eating well for the last

couple of days and yesterday he only ate 6 oz total and would scream

if I even put a bottle near his mouth. Yes I am a first time mom so

maybe it wasn't that big of a deal but as we all know it is very

important that he eats. I called the pediatrician's office after

hours and a nurse called me back. She asked me the usual questions

and then she asked if he had any diagnosed conditions. I explained

that Isaac was full term but was small and the genetics specialist

has said that he is either IUGR or has Rusell-Silver Syndrome. Guess

what she said... " He has Rusell Stover what? " Honestly...was she

serious? How is it possible that a supposedly trained nurse would

ask if my son had Rusell Stover disease? I don't expect her to know

what RSS is but please don't be a smart alec!

Thanks for listening..I feel better.

Mimi (Mom to Isaac dob 1-19-04)
