Guest guest
Generally they say for all kids 27 months is optimal. Nonverbal signs of readiness are pulling at diaper as if they want it off. If there is only a speech issue then I'd recommend teaching the potty sign and putting the kid on the potty after using it. Eventually they'll let you know that way. For the potty sign see signingtime.com. Best wishes! Angie wrote: >How do you know when your child who can not speak is ready to be potty >trained? Guest guest
Angie, I'm in the same place you are. I have no idea whatsoever - but if I come across anything, I will certainly let you know. Guest guest
ARE THEY TUGGING AT THE DIAPER OR TAKEING THE DIAPER OFF? that would be an indication. I had 4 kids and 3 wore cloth diapers and were trained around 2 but my 4th with special needs always wore disposables was not trained until he was 5. That is more typical these days that most of the kids I have taken care of get trained around 3 I think it is because the newer disposable diapers are so comfortable-charlotte ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Watch for any signs such as patting his front or behind areas. My son started with those signs and has moved on to pulling his diaper off if he is wet or dirty. I would start teaching him the sign for potty...Put your thumb in between your pointer finger and middle finger...then shake your hand back and forth. My son will sometimes sign potty, even if it is too late. I usually sign and say potty to him and sit him on the pot with a book. Sometimes nothing happens and sometimes it does. But practice makes perfect! Good Luck. > > How do you know when your child who can not speak is ready to be potty > trained? Guest guest
My child started peeing in the shower! I knew he was ready then. He was a month shy of 3 years old. He is alos my fourth so I have helped my children potty learn three times before he was ready. I just used a potty on the floor and he understood what to do after a week. I just frequently suggest he use the potty. If he peed in his pants I'd take him anyway. Also I stopped using diapers altogether. With my children if you use a diaper in the car or at night when potty learning they wll use the diaper. They all only seemed to understand once the diapers were discontinued. Guest guest
Hey ANgie, My son is 21 months old and he is learning how to use the potty right now. He is now using the " big boy toliet " about 3 x a day. First he started just being in the restroom w/ his father and we would just let him sit on the little potty whenever he wanted too. He also does the sign for potty ( kinda like shaking your fist). He is not fully potty trained but he will let us know if he is wet by sisigning potty. We give him lots of praise even when he just wants to sit on the potty. Reading books has helped too. We have a potty book for boys. I think the funniest part of the whole thing is that he likes flushing. And he know if he does go potty in the potty he can flush and then he waves bye-bye! So he will go a little bit... flush.. go a little flush etc. lol... You can tell that he is proud of himself. I hope that helps a bit. Blessings, angela > > How do you know when your child who can not speak is ready to be potty > trained? I am just wondering b/c I think mine might be ready but not > sure how to go about doing it.
