Guest guest
-- It does sound like maybe some kind of heat rash-y thing. I'd wash her feet really well, make sure they are very dry, a thin coat (kind of hard to do) of lanolin, thin socks, shoes. If the shoes are making it lots worse and she seems to be in pain, listen to her! Is she prone to very sweaty feet? Has it been really warm all of the sudden? Have you used a different laundry detergent, fabric softener, anything like that? Could possibly be an allergic reaction. Make sure she's sock-less tomorrow during her time out of the FAB. Guest guest
Are her hands doing it too? I doubt this is it, but the one thing I always think when I hear spots on feet is Hand Foot and Mouth. Which isn't such a huge deal if she's got it, but it is contagious and you want to treat it properly if it is HFM. Is she eating well still? Fever? If you see spots on her hands check her mouth/throat. You may see ulcers in there which hurt when swallowing, thus the not eating. OK - just wanted to point that out because I didn't know what it was when it happened here but it's probably just a rash in your case. How's she doing now? Guest guest
It's not HFM..my older daughter had that. The rash went away on her feet, then she woke up with a fever around 4:30 last night. I gave her tylenol, and the fever went away, but now today she's got the rash on her feet, and all over her back, belly, neck, cheeks and arms. It doesn't seem to bother her, so I gave her an oatmeal bath and I'm just going to let it be. I think it's probably roseola. It just freaked me out because it was only on her feet at first, so of course I immediately figured it was shoe related. The older two each took a turn with a fever and sleeping alot, 1 night, Neve on Wednesday & on last night...actually not a bad little sickness IMO! :-) THey were both fine in the morning, no rash. Oh well! I guess this is what you expect when you have 3 kids! Thanks! , mommy of: Guinevere, on & Ava 8/4/04 RCF ABS FAB 18/7 > >HEEELLLLPPPP!!! Guest guest
its all over now? Kinda like a rough bumpy, almost sandpapery rash? Have you considered scarlet fever? Your description of the rash coming on all over the body like that is exactly how we experienced it. If you search scarlet fever online you can find some dermatology pictures of the rash associated with it to compare with. It's strep throat basically. We just got our education on scarlet fever here in the past year too. HFM was last summer, scarlet fever 3x for Kenton this year and once each for the little ones. I hate sending them to school sometimes... they bring home some fun stuff! Poor little girl, I hope you figure it out soon. I'd be willing to bet it's scarlet fever if it fits the description, but I'm no doc of course (although I was right every time I saw the doc for it this past year going in saying it was SF - that rash is pretty unmistakable IMO). It does come with a fairly high fever for a few days and it's treated with antibiotics really only to prevent Rheumatic Fever which is scarlet fever gone bad. In many cases it will go away on it's own our doc said. Feel better soon Ava! Kori At 10:14 AM 5/14/2005, you wrote: >It's not HFM..my older daughter had that. Guest guest
Oh, Kori, it's getting better & better! Now all three little monkeys have it! The baby has it the worst, head to toe, on just broke out today with big bright red blotches on his cheeks, and some on his back & belly, and Neve got it yesterday afternoon, started with the bright red cheeks and spread to her arms, chest & back. She's the least severe. I'll have to look into scarlet fever now...although I had my MIL look at the baby on Saturday (when the rash first started) and she didn't mention SF. She's an RN, and my DH (her son) had scarlet fever when he was little, so she's always a little paranoid about that one...I don't know what to! I just know I DON'T feel like trooping all 3 to the pedi tomorrow for $45 in office visit fees!!! ;-D > > > >HEEELLLLPPPP!!! Guest guest
If it isn't scarlet fever I'll eat my hat! LOL kidding... I don't know for sure anything but those symptoms and spreading... it's worth a check. Three rashy children... I dunno... I would take them in. Just take the one in who is the worst for the appointment so you have only one co-pay, and if the culture comes out positive you know the others have it too and the ped can prescribe antibiotics for all three. It's a given if one has it, they all do with the same symptoms. Any good ped would see right through that and know you don't need to have them all cultured. There are other symptoms, a strawberry tongue (red spotty), fever, Vertechial striping in the throat (ahh hell, I can't spell that and this spell checker sucks) which the doc should know to look for with strep, more. Bring all three in with you and maybe the doc will take a quick look see with all of them in the room. My doc will do this for us, but maybe he's just a gem. In fact, that's what he's done with scarlet fever in the past. Like I said, Kenton's had it 3 times this school year and he was the only one ever cultured, yet all three were treated when they started showing signs. Whatever it is, I feel for ya, not fun at all. Hey, I know the last two insurance co's I've had paid 100% for sick visits. Are you sure you would owe a co-pay for this? Here, I searched it for you since I knew what I was looking for and could weed out the dumb stuff. Some of the photos below are of considerably worse cases of SF than just the sandpapery rash, but there's a few of chests and arms and cheeks that I could tell looked exactly like my son when I first saw this (actually went into the doc pretty sure of what it was before I got there from looking at these dermatology pics). You may or may not recognize anything from the links below. http://www.dermnet.com/thumbnailIndex.cfm?moduleID=24&moduleGroupID=328&groupInd\ ex=0&numcols=0 http://dermatlas.med.jhmi.edu/derm/result.cfm?Diagnosis=-555701252 http://www.dermnetnz.org/bacterial/scarlet-fever.html http://www.pediatrics.wisc.edu/education/derm/tutc/scarlatiniform.html (I got all these here, there's a few more links there I didn't paste) http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin/md/scarletfever.html Another to compare to, would be pics of Fifth's Disease, which also is a red rashy thing. Described as a cheek slap looking rash that can spread to trunk/buttocks area. Don't know if it comes with a fever or not. If neither of these is close, start searching dermatology pages for pictures of rashes or google *childhood rashes* or something like that... Or just take them in... I'm curious to know if I'm off base here, so please send an update when you do know! good luck! Kori At 01:30 PM 5/15/2005, you wrote: >Oh, Kori, it's getting better & better! Guest guest
Doesn't 5th disease also have a rash that covers the body? I also think that may be the same as HFM. My son had it, but it was so long ago, I forget what the rash looked like. Shook Retail Operations Manager/Baking Instructor Vie de France Yamazaki, Inc. 2070 Chain Bridge Rd. Guest guest
5th disease is kind of a lacey looking rash...almost like leopard spots. I had it when I was little. Hand foot mouth is more bumpy spots on the affected body parts, Neve had it when she was little. (We only get the freakiest diseases around here!) > Doesn't 5th disease also have a rash that covers the body? I also think > that may be the same as HFM. Guest guest
Okay, get ready to eat! Just kidding! I'm not really sure what we're dealing with here...the older 2 have basically cleared up. The baby's " spots " are slowly fading. Yesterday they seemed to flare up when she was hot...like when she napped, the side of her face she was laying on they got very red. But now they're fading away. I didn't take them to the doc. I'm really convinced it was just a viral thing...one of those freaky kid rash thingys I'd pay my co-pay and the doc would say, Yeah, it's a rash. Our normal pedi (as opposed to the idiot I talked to Friday night) is very laid back-- not a big medicine junkie. But I did look into scarlet fever, I already looked at most of those pics you listed. The rash has a *similar* look, but it's not sandpapery at all. You almost couldn't feel anything on their skin. And it's apparently pretty rare in kids under 2, they have those great maternal antibodies. Ava's only 9 months, and still nursing. Plus they only had the one night of fever each, not 2-5 days like the info said. So, I really don't think it was SF. I'm sticking with roseola, because I haven't changed detergents or anything, and it's going away now. Oh well! More fun in a mommy's life!
