Sandi,

First let me wish you the best of luck on your surgery.

I just wanted to comment that 140 would take you from a body mass

index of about 50 down to about 22.0. Since 22.5 is considered

the " ideal " body mass, you may be expecting a bit much. Based on

loosing 80% of your excess weight I would expect you to reach closer

to 180 lbs. You might make it all the way to 140, but if you define

140 as the success criteria then you might be setting yourself up for

failure. Look at getting under 200 as you big goal and anything

beyond that as extra. You won't be a model for Vouge, but you will

be so much more healthy. If you body wants to settle in to 180 lbs,

please don't diet to try to get rid of those last 40 lbs, as this is

what causes protien malnutrion according to Dr. A. And if that

happens Dr. A will do a take down and you won't like it!

Don't want to be a downer. Your doing a great thing. I am guessing

it has been a few years since you were at 180 lbs or less, so you

might not realize how great a 5'7 " gal looks at that weight. Once

your reach that weight you can get maybe 10 lbs more loss from

removing excess skin.

I can't give out a numbers, but my wife had the RNY surgery and

worries about those last 20-30 lbs a great deal. I think most women

do, but put health before vanity.

Maybe some post-op gals with a BMI in the 27-30 range can chime in on

what they look like, or maybee vist some before/after picture

sights. Going from a BMI of 50 down below 30 is going to do so much

good you won't believe it.

Here is to wishing you an smooth and uneventful sugery.

Please tell us how it went when you get to the other side.

I am 5'7 " and started at 299.5 pounds. I am 11 months post op and the

pic is of me at 192 pounds with a BMI around 29 I think...not a full

body shot, but the bod doesn't look too bad if I do say so myself ;)

Since this pic was taken I have lost another 16 pounds and now weigh

about 176 with a BMI at 27 or so. If my weight loss stopped right now

I would be happy. I would like to take off another 25-30 pounds, but

Judie,

Your pre-op BMI is 42 - not bad. You ideal BMI is about 22, so you

are 20 BMI points over the ideal. If you loose 70% of your excess

weight then you will loose 14 BMI points giving you a BMI of 28. So

you will weigh 163 lbs. 70% is a fairly conservative estimate and

you might do a bit better (say 80%) which would put you at a BMI of

26 or 151 lbs. I would consider anything below BMI=30 as a success,

and that would be 175 lbs. So you should loose 70-94 lbs. If you

excercise regularly you can loose more, if you drink a 6 pack of coke

every day you will loose less, but this gives you a rough idea what

to expect.

Welcome Deanna,

Hi, from a fellow Portlander. I had a RNY on 10-29-01 with Dr. Emma

. This group has been extremely helpful to me since before WLS. I

hope it is as helpful to you.

Do you attend the monthly support meetings for post ops of Swanstrom and

? I am terrible with names so If I have seen you there I apologize.

I look forward to hear about your journey.

I am also a newbie to this support group...and everyone has been wonderful

and helpful...There is a thread that's called...oh no i forget....lol..maybe

someone can help...lol...something 101....Graves disease 101 maybe??

Anyways...here's my story....

I also was diagnosed with Graves Disease in March....I was started on 600mg

of PTU....up until June my levels were not registering on the scale..now they

r...

My endo increased my PTU to 900mg... " nip it in the bud " so to speak....My

Atenonol...(betablocker) was increased from 50mg to 100mg..and I am on Vioxx

25mg

for joint pain and muscle ache....The endo also signed papers to put me on

diabilty indefinetly....

I had pretty much all the symptoms to hyperthyroidism....and the bulging eyes

and tremors...(Graves signs..)

Currently my blood pressure has come down alot....( from 180/90 roughly) down

to around 120 to 130/73)....my heart rate has also dropped from 127 bpm to in

between 60 and 80...

I still have the eye problem....they discovered a heart murmur...(found out

Thursday)....I was droppin weight drastically (like 210 pounds at xmas and by

June was down to 143) and currently my weight has started to increase..I am up

to 216.....(although i have no appetite)....my tremors r controlled by the

Atenonol...some days it works...other days i wish i could take the whole

bottle.....Stress really plays a number on me....My memory is shot and I am

experiencin bouts of confusion and disorientation...Broke out on rash on upper

arms and

chest...

Last week I discovered myself that perhaps the PTU increase is sending me

crashin into Hypothyroidism....I have become extremely tired (been alseep since

wednesday except for maybe a total of 3 hours...)the weight gain....and

increased blood pressure the past week....

I am waitin till MOnday to talk with another endo....get a second opinion so

to speak...and see if they agree what my endo's treatment is....if its the

right one....

Welcome to the board ....I have reread everything i just typed to you

several times and not sure if i got to my point....My answer is most of us do

suffer long term effects it seems....especially people that have experienced

RAI...or develop kidney disease...etc....

I am goin now...I feel my mind goin to mush....LOL...I hope to talk to you

again...Back to sleep for me....

Hi everyone!!!....Nighters everyone!!!!

earlier and had told a different doctor, who was treating me for

Hepatitis E, which I now think I got because my WBC was low. But I

was switched around among three different doctors and this symptom

got lost in the shuffle. I also could not open jars, but just thought

that I was tired.

Hi

I'm fairly new to this group as well but unlike most on here I

haven't got Graves, but I do live with it. My husband has had Graves

for around 8 years now. From my understanding Graves is hereditary

of which the gene has yet to be identified. I feel his was triggered

by an emotional trauma which happened around the time his Graves

started. For him it has been a rollercoaster of both physical and

emotional, from feeling fine to feeling extremely low, stressed and

angry. Sometimes it manifests itself in rage but this is seldom now

as I keep a close eye on him!

I know what you mean about no-body understanding, it is very

difficult to try and explain this disease to anyone who hasn't got

first hand experience. This was my reason for joining the group.

Some of the messages on here I don't understand either, I'm sure you

need a medical degree to understand half of them!

The best advice anybody could give to you would be to research your

options before you make any permanent decision. Don't be persuaded by

your doctor to have any treatment you don't understand or feel

uncomfortable with. My husband was all set to have RAI until I came

across this group and foud out some facts. I was appauled at how

little we knew or were told by the medical professionals. Knowledge

is power. The more you have the easier it becomes to make the right

decision for you.

I wish you and your baby well, keep safe and take care.

Hi everyone! just wanted to drop in and say hello since I just found

you today. My name is and I had gastric bypass done in

November of 2002.. and just found out a couple of weeks ago that I am

again pregnant.. what a suprise!! I am currently the mother of 3

girls and lost 143 lbs with my gastric bypass. I am somewhat worried

about this pregnancy, since my food intake is not normal.. as I guess

you all can relate to. Can anyone give me any tips on what I should

be doing to help insure that I deliver a healthy baby??? Should I

try to eat higher calorie things in order to give the baby the

calories it needs??.... Any suggestions would be appreciated! I am

approximately 7 weeks pregnant at this point and have an appointment

with the doc next tues. Thanks in advance!

My doc said that you need to make sure you take care of you. The baby will

take all it needs from you. All you need is an extra 250-300 cals a day to

sustain a pregnancy. Hope that helps.
