Guest guest
I live in MI and I take my 3.10 son to Kaufman center. It's an hr drive so we go 1x per week. He was evaluated by and we currently see an associate for services. Hmmmm... I have to be honest because I think it's important people don't put NK too high on a pedistal. My eval was a little disappointing and I left there feeling like she dumped a bucket of cold water over my head. . But I must say I am impressed with the whole operation and we are dropping about 800. per month ykkkks. So with that kind of " cake " one best be feeling mighty fuzzy I got the very strong impression that she is not all that " on board " with biomeds, which confused me a lot since she is so promoted with the Late Talker book. But matters not because I am comfortable that it is top notch therapy. So you discuss your biomed " plan " with your very well seasoned and active DAN! Dr whom you are totally comfortable. Also, if you already have an apraxia dx...Going for an eval with would be repetitive and just cost you 300.00. Just don't do it because you've read that she is the " goddess " of apraxia and you just have to get some face time with her. > > Has anyone on the board taken their child to see Kaufman in > Wisconsin(I think that is where she is). Guest guest
I took my daughter to Kaufmann in March of this year. 's office is West Bloomfield, MI. I think that you can do a web search to get her website name. You can even email on her website. is excellent. My daughter has verbal apraxia and she's made tremendous process since my daughter went to see her in December of last year. Maddi's speech therapist used the videos as training videos since apraxia is quite rare and requires much different approach than regular speech therapy. Please don't feel discouraged. My daughter at 18 months could only make vowel sounds. Now at three, she's talking in 3-5 word sentences. I went to when I had the same frustration of not getting words. In a few months, my daughter improved leaps and bounds. Oddly enough, my daughter was very sick for three weeks (even hospitalized with Kawasaki disease) and she started talking in words and very short sentences. I would recommend 's summer program to you. We didn't go to it, but your speech therapist sounds good, so he/she may not need training. Your son might just benefit from intensive therapy. Good luck! If you need more info., feel free to email me at kosantowski@.... grodinmorrison <grodinmorrison@...> wrote: Has anyone on the board taken their child to see Kaufman in Wisconsin(I think that is where she is). We still have a long way to go as far as getting the words to really sound like what he means, and also getting him to spontaneously use words. I guess that is the biggest challenge. He prefers to melt down instead of using a word, or even a sign for that matter. If anyone has used or has any ideas on getting spontaneous speech I would love to hear about it. Guest guest
A variety of cues can be used to try to stimulate prompted/spontaneous speech. Many you may have tried before without as much success and maybe it is time to try them again now that he is able to verbalize more. Use a sign or gesture yourself to give a prompt. In this, we are not really expecting the child to sign back (although they may), but to say the word we are signing. Say the first sound or syllable of the word only and wait for the child to produce the word. Use a gestural cue for the first sound of the word to help prompt the child to say the word. Using " pat " phrases may also be helpful. So, practice short phrases and and short words. E.g. " I-want-___ " with pauses. Use pictures to help prompt the child to say a familiar word. Remember too that if upset or once frustrated that the child may have difficultly getting out what they want to say even with their best efforts. Guest guest
Beth, Check out the verbal behavior style of ABA. There are 2 groups ( and verbalbehavior) that cover this area. Kaufman by the way also uses the vb style of ABA in her clinic. The vb style focuses on using language in a functional, spontaneous way by getting the person to request things, thus learning the power of language (I speak, I get). There are other parts of ABA vb style that I really like such as errorless learning, pairing the staff with fun activities so the child enjoys the therapy, etc. My son has gone from totally non-verbal to be able to spontaneously request things that to these methods. Guest guest
We took Josh a couple of years ago (going on 3 three years now!) for an eval. She's in West Bloomfield, Michigan. I absolutely and strongly urge anyone to take their kid to her at least for an eval. We found that, while we couldn't stay in Michigan for treatment, her evaluation and report were gold when it came to getting services in the schools. She is fantastic with the kids, she's a kick of a person, and the whole experience was incredible! Guest guest
Dr Kaufman nearly killed me 10 years ago when I was his patient and was dying of Lyme disease and severe mercury poisoning in Dallas Texas. He assured me that candida was the real culprit and gave me 2 powerful antifungals. These poisoned my liver and released more mercury into my system from the dying, mercury laden, yeast carcasses. I almost died after that and had to be fed intravenously for a year to survive. When I was griping to Dr Rea the well known environmental doctor about what Kaufman had done to me, Dr Rea's comment about Kaufman was " He doesn't know how to treat sick people " . Fortunately, I met Dr W Lee Cowden a couple years after this and he got me well by treating ALL the major components of my illness, with ozone and multiple other therapies. Dr Cowden is a brilliant clinician; Kaufman is a candida salesmen who has gotten wealthy and famous charismatically selling fungus, but he doesn't talk about the folks he almost killed like me. There are lots of practitioners out there who have loads of personality, and are just right for the boob tube, but they aint got no skills. I think that fungus is certainly a factor in many illnesses, but Dr Kaufman has tunnel vision about fungus. You can't simplify something as complex as the modern illnesses of cancer, MCS, CFS and others down to fungus. Even though fungus harms health, what is allowing it to exist unchecked in the body in the first place? What is the underlying cause of the chronic fungus? How many times have sick people with these conditions tried to wipe out their candida or other fungus and expected to be well and yet remained sick or got worse? Fungal infections and chronic overload of fungal toxins harms health but there are dozens of other factors that are every bit as deleterious to health. If you are sitting on 40 thumb tacks will you feel better if you pull one or two out of your butt? Fungus is only ONE THUMB TACK! You gotta pull out a lot more to get well. Guest guest
Of course I was not aware of that tid bit on Dr. Kaufman and I am glad you brought it up. I agree, and I think that is why I have been unsuccessful at getting rid of my candida~~~~there is something else in the way and I just have not been able to figure out what. How do you get in touch with this Dr. Cowden and what state is he in? One of my big problems is that I live in a highly isolated area too far from any good practitioners and where I can get sufficient diagnostics and am unable to be away from home for more than 8 hours at a time due to my hubby who is an invalid and a few birds that need constant care. What I need is someone who can work with me on the phone that knows what they are doing and can send the tests that need to be done. Over the last six years I have been unable to find anyone. I tried one guy from New York and he was just stringing me along taking my money. Anyone know of someone by telephone that is not a fraud, let me know and send me their number and I will sure give it a try. Steph
Guest guest
Dr Cowden will spend 3 to 4 hours with new patients doing constant kinesiology, EAV testing, and in office urine and other fluid tests. It can't be done over the phone. He is in Phoenix at present. He was seeing patients in Florida, California, and Texas for a while but I don't think he is at present. I can find out if he will do that in the future. Jack > > send me their number and I will sure give it a try. > > Steph >
Guest guest
Well, I've recently gone to one of 's seminars. I feel she's quite educated on Apraxia and the technical " stuff " that the SLPs can learn from her is abounding. I did NOT find her seminar helpful to me as a parent, however. I felt that while she has a TON to say, she gets quite sidetracked and strays from her lecture quite a bit. She focused a GREAT deal on the personal stories of the children in her video clips, and much of what she had focused on at that point was how she has helped them, blah blah blah. While it's great to see success stories, personally speaking, I would rather attend a seminar to get INFORMATION, and the most important part of the seminar (according to her lecture outline that was prepared for the guests) was geared towards the END of the day-- when she totally lost focus on much of anything. The beginning focused mostly on the diagnostics and technical terminology that is geared more for the professionals, without a doubt. The ending was more geared to a PRACTICAL way to carry out her theory and methods etc. That was greatly lacking, in my opinion, and while it was nice to have it as an overall experience, I personally don't feel that I benefited more from that than I might have from reading a book on the topic. I know that there were several parents, like myself, who attended the seminar and ALL of them that I spoke to held the same opinion. I'm not saying this to discourage you, because I do think that she has a great deal of information to put out there, and I feel that the Kaufman cards are a HUGE success (with my son, at least) and I highly respect her and her knowledge. But she DOES definitely get distracted and off-topic when she starts to talk ABOUT the kids and how she's helped them, etc. I know that I was honest in my opinion poll at the end of the seminar, and the other parents happened to mention the same things that I did, so maybe she's taken what we've said and taken it to heart and that has helped her in the last couple months in her lectures?? That's always a good possibility. I do believe you will benefit from the experience if you go into it eyes open and expect that there WILL be a LOT of technical jargon, but she is a VERY personable person and she's a " people person " so it makes it quite bearable for those who aren't " professionals " . hope that helps Becky **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Guest guest
We used Kaufman products with success. I initially attended one of her seminars in Manchester. We sent a couple of dvd's across and had follow up phone consults with her. We saw good results in terms of articulation - could articulate really well sat at a table. He still finds articulation difficult when using spontaneous language. I ordered kits one and two direct from Kaufman's center. Anyone know if I can purchase Kaufman in the UK? can say all of his sounds now including th, sh, but still struggling to put whole words together although better with a sign prompt so I kind of like the look of the Kaufman sign and say cards, then again ASL isn't signalong but I can probably substitute. It will probably be expensive which is why I am looking for reasonable priced toys as motivators for his independent play and mands. He can now point to himself and say "Shaw" and I am "mum" instead of Pat, hurray. Anyone else combined VB with Kaufman? Vicky
