Guest guest
Hello! I am somewhat new to the group. I actually joined a couple months ago and have been lurking a bit here and there trying to take in the information. My daughter, 23 months old, was diagnosed with Developmental Verbal Apraxia a couple of months ago. She had completely lost her speech (the few words that she had) when she was 12 months old. She has only begun talking and babbling within the last few months through speech therapy. Her therapist has suggested I introduce fish oil into her diet but I know very little about the overall effects of doing so. I spoke with her pediatrician and he basically called her SLP a " quack! " I now plan to switch to a more open minded pediatrician for obvious reasons. Anyway, I visited the website yesterday afternoon and listened to both boys with apraxia speaking. First, I was amazed at their progress but then the reality set in that this is truly a life long condition. I fear for what the future may hold for my daughter if she is unable to speak clearly... I also fear that we will lose her " window of opportunity " because I didn't get her to the right specialist in time or I didn't try fish oils in her diet soon enough or... I guess we are still trying to come to terms with the reality of apraxia and what that means for her. To be honest, I was just thrilled to learn that she wasn't autistic! I thought to myself that we now have a name and reason for her loss of speech and other delays so we will go to our therapies and " fix " the problem. I see that it isn't so easy now... Anyway, thanks for reading my ramblings. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions as we muddle our way through doctors, therapies, etc. PLEASE let me know. We are at the very beginning of this journey and I would appreciate the help or advice of those that were once in my shoes. Thanks,
