Jodi,

Just some thoughts you may want to consider and maybe ask his doctor:

- You may want to see if there is a way to soften his poops - like maybe

gentle enemas? My brother had this problem as a child and tore himself and

had hernias later in life. I think surgery took care of it, but perhaps a

bit of prevention would be worth it... I've also heard that when stools

are stuck inside, they release junk back into the body which can make a

person sick.

- Would adding oil to his feeds help the poop slide out easier? I'm a fan

of the Udo's Perfected Oil Blend which can be found at VitaminShoppe.com

becuse it doesn't hurt Tim's liver enzymes like the corn oil seemed to do.

- Would prune juice help, or would it help to blenderize some bran into

his feeds? With a note from a doctor, you can get a discount on a Vitamix,

which is a super-powered blender which is great at liquifying solid foods

to go through a tube. Many people on Yahoo groups' feeding support group

have great things to say about that - it provides more of a normal

stimulation to all the bodily organs to have a balanced diet. They have

even provided tube feeding recipes.

- Also, uses a blenderized formula which has beef, fruit, and

veggies in it called Compleat Pediatric - saves the fuss of blenders and

has all the vitamins/minerals of formulas (and is covered by insurance),

yet has some BHT for perservative and not as flexible.

I'll pray for you and !

Inga

Hi Jodi

Liam has always suffered constipation, and my only advice is to make

sure is not dehydrated, is he having lots of wet nappies

during the day. Liam is on quite concentrated formula through his g

tube and if we dont add water boluses during the day, he becomes very

constipated. We give Liam prune juice to soften, but the main help is

making sure he has enough water.

Good luck

Jody(mum to Liam 2.5yrs, 8.8kg not sure ht at moment)

Hi Jodi,

There should be posts on this in the archives. You could search for

them. I know that other children ( included) have had problems

with this.

seems to do better with the unflavored peptamen jr, rather than

the vanilla. It has to do with the osmotility (?) of the formula.

Also, as he has gotten older it has gotten better.

Good luck,

Judith
