I have been reading some of the posts about ght. I would like to

know the risks or possible effects of ght. I was under the

assumption that most everyone on this site is on gh. I guess I was

wrong. My endo never said anything about effects of ght. Someone

please tell me anything and everything you know. Don't hold back.

Hi , I can only tell you what my Endo said to me in a letter in 1998 when

we were considering gh treatment. We did get gh for her in the end but these

comments have always worried me.

This is from part of a letter about gh treatment.

'It is important to consider whether there might be some long term side effects

in gh treatment. This is an area which is going to take 10 or 20 years before we

are able to assess fully and even then we are probably looking at theoretical

effects that might be relevant in 40 or 50 years time. From a number of well

documented clinical research studies, particularly in Europe we know that the

doses of gh required to help a child with IUGR/RSS grow faster are not

problematic. Some changes in the bodies hormone balance can be measured, and

these are all understandable within our knowledge of how gh energy balance,

sugar and insulin are controlled.Presently, we accept that these are part of the

changes in the body necessary if we are to bring about change in a childs growth

pattern.A number of these factors can be monitored from time to time on a blood

test which I would plan to include as part of Imogen's care. The theoretical

risks relate primarily to possible increased risks of diabetes

in adult life and to an increased risk of heart problems and high blood

pressure. It must be emphasised thet there is no proof that this would happen and

these concepts are based on current research studies which look back several

decades and for which definitive answers are most unlikely to be available

within the next decade, and certainly not the next few years during which

Imogen's growth is to be a major issue.Certainly, her impaired growth is

'severe' compared with other children with RSS, some of whom have height in the

lower end of normal range'

I just took out the relevant bit for you ......hope it helps...I realise

it's a few years old but I doubt much has changed!!
