Just thought that I'd write to say that our experience was quite

similar to both of yours. At 29 weeks I had an ultrasound that

showed that Olivia had stopped growing and that there might be

something wrong with her umbilical cord so they rushed me up to the

city for a Bio ultrasound. She was extremly IUGR and it showed that

there were problems with her cord and that we had to take her by c-

section immediatly. We were scared silly when they told us not to

expect her to cry and not to expect her to survive very long. The

tour of the NICU was just crushing. They delivered me 29 weeks and

all 1 lb. 11 oz. of her came out kicking and screaming!! It was the

best noise that I've ever heard! When she was 5 days old they

actually had to sedate her because she was too active (pulled out

her feeding tube, oxygen tube, belly button IV, heart and resps.

stickers, the little devil) and she was losing too much weight

burning all of those calories doing naughty things. She went down

to 1 lb. 7oz. before she started to gain weight. She was only in

hospital for 2 months and came home at 3lbs. 6oz.

Although she does still have many medical and OT/PT issues she's a

happy, energetic, lovable little girl.

Leah,

First off, I love your name. If I had a girl, or ever do, that is

the name I will give her. But, spell it Leigha. I love it! )

Okay, back to business. I didn't expect to hear cry either.

I was so nervous to see him. Based on all the stuff they told me

during all of my u/s I was afraid to see what he would look like.

But, once they got him out and held him up quickly, struggled

to get a little cry out and he was beautiful. I just cryed when I

saw him and saw that there was life. They did have to intibate him

cuz he was struggling to breathe to the point where he was very

purple. I could see his color was purple when they held him up, but

he was alive! I was so happy. I didn't get a chance to worry about

him too bad though becasue they were so good about coming in recovery

to update me on . That's when I learned he probably wasn't

Trisomy 18, but he had an extra thumb and his lungs were very sick.

Plus, he needed to be on the ventilator because he couldn't breath on

his own. So, they did good about keeping me informed, but as they

brought news I worried if he would make it through all this. I

couldn't wait to see him. I got to go down that evening, in al my

glory....and pain! But, I had to see him. He was all hooked up and

had tubes and wires coming out everywhere. I broke down while the

nurse was breifing me on him. I couldn't be strong anymore. Seeing

him lay there and looking as bad as he did, I couldn't take it. I

loved him and it kiled me to see him like that. I wondered why it

had to be like this.

Olivia sounds like she was ready to go from the beginning. I had to

smile when I read about her puling all her stuff out. She

said, " Forget this stuff. " ) was the same way. If he just

moved he lost weight. It was pretty bad getting him to gain at all.

He dropped to 2 lbs. 7 oz. When he left the hospital at three months

old, he was 5 lbs. 3 oz. But, the crammed him full of food and high

calories. His throwing up was pretty bad.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your stoy too. It sounds like a lot of us

have similar experiences.

Gosh.....you've done so well!! Imogen was 2lbs 13 oz at birth and that was

little enough thankyou very much. But Olivia at 4 has caught up in size with my

Imogen who is 6........so rest on your laurels!!!!
