Guest guest
Thought those with children that have a leg length difference might like this info: Elyse went to the orthopedist today. She is seen for scoliosis since 7/03 and a leg length difference of 1 " for a few years. She is 13years old on GH 1yr 10mos and currently 4ft 10in. If she continues her current growth rate she should reach 5 ft by this time next year. So the orthopedists suggestion on correcting her leg length discrepency is to put staples on either side of her left knee to slow the growth plates and allow the right leg to catch up and then remove the staples once she stopped growing or when the leg length was equal. This procedure is a day surgery and takes about 1 hour. The other option was to remove a portion of her growth plate in the left leg but due to the unpredictablity of growth with RSS he felt this would all be guess work and it is permanent once done. As for leg lengthening it is only considered if there is at least a 2in difference. I hope I made sense. -
Guest guest
Hi , Can I just ask you what height Elyse achieved without the help of GH treatment? Our daughter is severe RSS so at the age of 6 and a half she is not yet 3 feet. We did try GH treatment for a while when she was younger but we found it too distressing and didn't think that it was worth it for an extra couple of centimetres with the added worry of possible side effects and implications on future health. Can you remeber how tall Elyse was at 6 and how tall are you and Elyse's father? I would be ecstatic if Imogen got to 4ft 10! But as I am only 5ft 1 myself and her dad is 5' 6 I don't think she will get anywhere near that. Also another concern is PSM. Did you daughter have this? If so how did you manage it? Thanks Eileen.....mum to Imogen 6.5yrs, about 85 cms, about 16lbs RSS Fish mlfish@...> wrote: Thought those with children that have a leg length difference might like this info: Elyse went to the orthopedist today. Guest guest
Hi Eileen, Elyse was born at 4lbs 5oz 17 1/4in full term but developmentally at 36wks gestation. At age 6 she was 40 " and 28lbs. She was diagnosed tentatively at about 2wks and verifited RSS at 9mo. Her doctor and geneticist told us it was just a wait and see situation. Then at age 10 1/2 I found this site and Magic. When we found an endo we could work with (1st one didn't work out) she was 11yr 4mos by 11 1/2 blood tests showed she was in puberty. We and Elyse decided to try Lupron and GH. When she started GH 3/14/01 she was 4'5 " s of her last visit 11/6/03 she was 4'1 " and 68 lbs. I am 5'4 " and her father is 6'. The guess is she would have been 4'6 " -4'7 " without GH and with GH 5' to 5'2 " . I'm not sure what you mean by PSM. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi ...thanks for answering all my questions! PSM is the 'posh' term for early puberty Premature Sexual Maturation. I was worrying that it might begin as early as 8......so 11 is not so bad compared to that. But I have a 'normal' daughter just coming up to 13 and I'm dreading her starting.....even the normal age seems too young!!!! From what you've told me Elyse has always been bigger and heavier than Imogen...she is at the severe end of the spectrum...only weighed 2lbs 13oz at 36 weeks gestation. It would be nice to know what her ultimate height would be...our endo would never tell us....giving rise to all sorts of fears....I just hope she gets over 4 foot!!But whatever height she ends up at we think she has the character and sparkiness to cope and that's the main thing! Thanks for taking the time to talk to me.. take care Eileen (imogen RSS 6.5, Lucy 12,Owen and Natasha 9) Fish mlfish@...> wrote: Hi Eileen, Elyse was born at 4lbs 5oz 17 1/4in full term but developmentally at 36wks gestation.
