Guest guest
Greetings all, who gives the DX or motor apraxia? motor planning etc? Is it a doctor or could it be the SLP? My son is 28 months old w/ a significant expressive language delay. His receptive appears much higher than his expressive. However, if he is asked to label objects/flash cards he gets a large amount correct - However, he will not label those items outside of labeling them through " asking him what is this " or pointing to a flashcard etc. All in all - if he used the words he knows through labeling and prompting he would be talking MUCH better - but somehow the words don't come out on his own. He is also very squeally, hummy and screams alots. He has an ABA home program, and 1 hour of speech and OT a week Hazel
Guest guest
it is to my knowledge that it is the SLP that diagnoses apraxia. mine is hesitant to say anything about it. i don't know if she's just waiting until he's older to give us the dx. i had to flat out ask her if she thought it was moderate apraxia and she said yes. anyhow, i'm switching therapists as soon as possible because we've been there since september and are not getting anywhere with her. she doesn't even seem comfortable with him and doesn't talk about what she's doing unless i ask her. well, i'm off topic already... what i wanted to write about was that my son is now almost 30 mo. when he was around 2, he SCREAMED, with joy and excitement. but it was so loud my husband and i were sure we were losing our hearing. he screamed in grocery stores, in the car, whenever he got excited. i laughed when i read your son is " screamy " . i know how that is! he did not start verbalizing outside of prompting until just recently. now when he's says BA very clearly, i know i can look down and see him signing milk please. and today i taught him to say WAWA for water and he said it whenever he needed his watering can refilled. his receptive language is awesome but his expressive is, well, 3 words. PAPA, BYE BYE, and now, WAWA. thank goodness for sign language. he has about 50 or more signs. your son sounds a lot like mine. we just recently started doing the kauffman method with him. we don't have the cards but i know about it and i went to school for hearing and speech problems so i know how to reduce words to their basic phonemes. all i wanted to say about this is he has been very receptive to actually trying to approximate the reduced word and will try quite hard. this is the first time i've seen him try to copy me so much. this method has been a help. you may want to try this route too if your son is like mine. traditionaly EI speech therapy is not cutting it for us. it also seems that the OT is helping more than the speech. do you find this too?
