Guest guest
Hi All: I've been wanting to ask this on the listserve for quite a while but just wasn't sure if it is too sensitive a question to ask... but I really need some answers, so here it goes... My son is now 3 years 4 months old and is IUGR/SGA. He was born with hypospadias and underwent 2 surgeries during his first year to have his penis repaired. Now his penis look normal, but I am really worried about its size. He is my only child so I do not have a comparision, but he goes to preschool everyday and from time to time I do bump into other 3-year-old boys in his class getting changed when I drop him off, so I know his penis is much shorter than theirs, I would say his is probably half the length of theirs (1 " , relaxed). My son's urologist didn't seem concerned when I raised the question, instead he said everybody is unique, and that penis is usually proportional to the body size (my son is 36 " tall and 30lbs, he is the size of an average 2 year old at 3 years 4 mons of age). He also said the penis gets most growth out of puberty so I do not need to worry. May I ask what your experience is like with your SGA/RSS boys when it comes to penis size? Is this a result of hypospadias or IUGR/SGA? or both? What is a normal penis size for a SGA boy his age? Should I be worried? Any other parents on this listserve who have boys with hypospadias?... Please email me privately if you would like. I really need some answers and I appreciate your help! Thanks so much! Guest guest
Bo, I can't really answer your questions too well, but I can relate to you. My is 18 months old, and I have thought this same thing. But, I KNOW his penis is small. I have just related it to his prematurity. But, I am not sure. He was only 2 lbs. 12 1/2 oz. at birth. His penis was almost non-existent then. They couldn't even do a circumcision on him, and still haven't. Anyway, does have hypospadious. I am worried about that, and maybe you can fill me in on what your urologist says about this, because we haven't seen one. Acually, Dr. H wasn't even that worried about it. But, it worries me. So, I did want to let you know that you aren't alone in this. My is small, too. You can email me, too if you want. Jodi R. Guest guest
Hi Bo, I responded to your post, but I don't see it here. So, I will try again. I was just saying that my is very small, also. He was born at 34 weeks, adn his penis was almost non-existent. They couldn't even circumsize him. But, I have always attributed his small penis to prematurity, and smallness in general. is 18 months old now, and weighs 12 lbs. 13 oz, and 25 1/2 in. So, he is stillvery small for his age. Still below the third percentile. Anyway, does have hypospadious, too. When we saw Dr. H, she didn't seem that concerned. It was mentioned, but overall that was the least of her worries. Maybe since you see a urologist, you can fill me in on what they say about the hypospadious. You can email me, too, if you want to. I would like to hear what they say about it. I am worried about and his size. Guest guest
Hi Bo my son also has hypsoadias and a very short penis. I was unaware of this as he is my first child until I saw my friends kids having their nappies changed. (My second son now 15 months would be twice as long) I did bring this up with the paediatrician and she said by puberty these things even out? Anyway my son also had 2 hernias that had to be operated on twice. He did not need the hypospadias operation as it is mild. Hope this helps - my concern is later on when perhaps is teased getting changed for PE or swimming but we'll cross that bridge when we have to. If you want to e-mail me privately Maeve.McEvoy@... Guest guest
Hiya Bo, I'm not sure what the answer is to your question or if there is one other then every child is different, but here's my experiences so far. Coby is now 14 months and weighs 17.3 lbs and is around 27 " long. He had 2 bilateral hernias repaired when he was 2 months old. He had a stage 3 hypospadias and has gone through the first surgery. He was to have the 2nd yesterday but is sick so it's been changed to the first of the year. Coby is not the average RSS child. He has all the traits but they are very mild. He has always been an eater and hasn't been extremely small. When he had his first surgery I asked his urologist how his penis sized looked in comparison to the average child. She said that it looked like a normal size for his size. She didn't say age, but size. I know it's so hard not to worry about what will add to our kids being teased and we try so hard to prepare ourselves, but I'm sure if the doc's aren't concerned then you can rest a little easier about it. Or else that is what I'm telling myself for now. Take care, le, mom to: ShyeLynn 9, Brock 7, and Coby & Carlee
