Granulation Tissue and Silver Nitrate

I took Alyssa to her 2 year check up today with her pediatrician. I have

mentioned previously we have been having a little trouble with leaking with

Alyssa's new g-tube place in late October. We have been using TAC (steroid

cream) for several weeks now to shrink the tissue. It was working for awhile,

but now seems not to be helping anymore. I agreed to try the silver nitrate.

They were on little wooden q-tip like applicators. Now the tissue is gray and

gross! Our ped is not very familiar and did not offer any insight on what to

expect. Soooo I have few questions:

What happens to the site now? Will stuff fall off? Does it just kind of

dissolve?

Also, how many applications are needed usually?

I have heard others say they do the applications themselves at home. How did

you get the applictors? THrough the pharmacy, or your home health?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks! Dayna, mOm to ALyssa, 2 and now 20lbs!!!

My son has had granulation issues in the past. One time we had an

appt. with our GI who gave me a prescription for the silver nitrate q-

tip like applicators. (He did the first application and told me to

repeat it is a few days) Well, my only advice is to be extremely

careful. The doctor is used to doing this and was much more skilled

than I.

The first problem was that the g-tube site was wet, from the leakage,

so the silver nitrate migrated onto his skin. Then TJ touched the

site I had just used the silver nitrate on which immediately turned

his finger tips black. My point is that it may look simple to apply

but is not so easy. Be very careful if you do it yourself as it

actually burns the skin.

The site will heal and yes the grayish looking skin will dry up and

fall off. My advice is to let the doctor do it.

Don't want to scare you but, I personally do not recommend this at

home.

Hi Dayna,

In answer to your questions...

1. The stuff just dissolves

2. needed one application each time it happened. For a few

months, the granulation tissue would eventually come back. Now it

hasn't happened in a very long time. His surgery was 6/02 and his

mic-key button was placed (I think)around 9/02.

3. We have silver nitrate and sticks at home. I believe we got a

prescription for both from either Dr Spigland (surgeon) or Dr H and

filled it at the pharmacy.

Good luck,

Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 3 yr 10 mo twins
