Guest guest
Hi all!I am having 's IEP meeting on Thursday to see about geeting him into special ed pre-school and I was concerned about if there is anything I need to know.. Question's I need to ask or what.. The occupational therapist say's it might be hard for him to get him in knowing that he passd his IQ testing and some of the other testing .. is very smart on certain things because he has been doing all the same test these people give him all the time and he has been in therapy since he ws 2 months old so I can see why he know's these test (putting the puzzels together and the shapes in the right holes) He does the same testing every time they test him it is like he has it memorized.. The thing I am concerned about is he doesn't know his ABC's and numbers and other things he needs to know to prepare him for kindergarten and his behavior is still WHEW!!! So I needed to know what I can do to back my self up for this meeting . I have his behavior specialist and one of his other therapist going with me for support to try to get him in but if all they look at is test scores I am afraid they won't pass him!! He does get a disability check so I am to mention that I have also mentioned to the director of the city school board about the Bush Law " NO Child Left Behind " Law... I don't know what else to do ... Any suggestion's..to the one who have been through this? for they really don't look at medical reason's !! Thanks for your help!! Guest guest
Dear , I am no expert on this topic although several of my children have been in special ed and I have done my share of ARD meetings and IEP's. Your child may not qualify as mentally delayed, which is the most common reason for children to be in special ed, but he may qualify as 'other impaired'. My oldest daughter qualified for this because she had speech impediments, although she is of considerably above-average intelligence. My sons have qualified because of ADD and depression. All of my children are of at least normal intelligence and would never qualify for services soley on the basis of an IQ test. You should be able to access some definitions on a web-site for your state to help you figure out how to say things. Also, in the State of Texas, as least, the district is required to provide me with a booklet outlining my rights and the rights of my children. You might see if you can find a booklet like that. It has really helped me to understand how the system works. I hope this helps. Hopefully, some of the other people, who are experts will post as well. Guest guest
Conny, thanks so much for getting back to me ,this info makes me feel much better about going to my meeting, my occupational therapist said we were targeting his speech delays and behaviorals.. He has oppistinol defiant disorder and obbssesive compulsive disorder, Sensory Integragation disfunction disorder so that is what she is going on. Seems odd you can't go on medical! Thanks for reminding me I do have the rights for parents booklet I got it at my 1st IEP meeting.I will be sure to take it. I was just worried because he is smart also.Thank you so much and I will let you know how it went!! Guest guest
- I have reviewed the kindergarten readiness test here in our town, which is in California. I don't know how they compare to your state/town's. Knowing your numbers and ABCs is not a requirement here. It is hand/motor skills, being able to sit still, etc. A child who doesn't know his numbers and ABCs may be very bright and just not able to sit still long enough. Putting this child into a special educ preschool may not be the right decision. But a normal pre-K program may give him that extra time to mature and be ready for kindergarten. What are your state's kind. requirements? Have they told you? And what about him so far makes you think that he belongs in a special education preschool? I hope I can explain Jodi & Yvettte's great convention presentation well enough -- An IEP is very different than qualifying for special education classes. I hope I can make this make sense. An IEP includes " services " -- these services can include special classes for learning, they can also include speech, or PT, or OT, or an aide in the classroom for an austistic child, etc. Along with the " services " , accomodations can be included in the IEP. Accomodations for an RSS child like frequent snack guarantees, along with special chairs, stools, etc. Every RSS child qualifies for an evaluation based on their RSS diagnosis -- under " other health impaired. " IF your child doesn't actually qualify for any services (meaning he isn't far enough off the curve in learning, motor skills, speech, etc) -- and you agree with them (disagreeing/appealing is another story), then you would need to have a 504 Plan for your child. This 504 Plan allows for ACCOMODATIONS ONLY -- no services. Does this make sense?? So what I mean by this is that it sounds like he isn't ready for kindergarten. Definitely. That he needs to be in preschool a year longer. But what makes you think it needs to be a " special education " preschool. Usually special education preschools are specifically geared for children with learning disabilities & other similar issues. Is this school maybe different? Are his behavioral issues that disruptive that you think this school would help? Does this make sense? Your son should still be evaluated simply based on his RSS diagnosis " other health impaired " . You should push for that right. OT, PT, speech, etc. evaluated. And I think it is great that your personal therapists are willing to attend. Very GOOD!!!! > > Hi all!I am having 's IEP meeting on Thursday to see about > > geeting him into special ed pre-school and I was concerned about if > > there is anything I need to know..
