Guest guest
We are finally starting Colin on Periactin and I'm a bit confused. His doctor prescribed .5 mg 3 times a day (2mg/5ml). I have searched the archives and it seems that usually it is taken twice a day. Any recommendations for me? Colin is g-tube fed and usually eats lunch and dinner only since he is not hungry in the morning after being fed all night. Would it be best to give it twice a day, before those two meals? Our doctor said it didn't matter how long before a meal it is given, but I see most of you give it 45 min. or so before the meal. Thanks for your advice! Colin & Hayden - almost 3! Guest guest
I have asked my doctor about pericatin and giving it to my son and he says he does not like it because it causes growth problems. Has anyone heard this before? Thanks > We are finally starting Colin on Periactin and I'm a bit confused. > His doctor prescribed .5 mg 3 times a day (2mg/5ml). Guest guest
The best advice we got regarding timing of dose relative to the meal was the following. Give the medicine. Then wait for him to ask for food. The first time we gave it to , I couldn't believe the reaction. She asked for food and then actually began eating it! Back in those days, there had been no spontaneous intake of food. So it was quite dramatic for us! I hope you get such a moment with Colin. Good luck, Irene > We are finally starting Colin on Periactin and I'm a bit confused. > His doctor prescribed .5 mg 3 times a day (2mg/5ml). Guest guest
Hi , I have never heard of periactin causing growth problems. I have been told that periactin is common antihistamine. It is a copy of Benadryl. So if periactin causes growth problems, I would suspect that any anithistamine causes growth problems and I don't think that is true. I think your doctor is misinformed. I hope this helps. Ken M > > We are finally starting Colin on Periactin and I'm a bit confused. > > His doctor prescribed .5 mg 3 times a day (2mg/5ml). Guest guest
Hi , When we first started on Periactin, we started giving it an hour before his worst meal of the day which was dinner. Also we took a month to work up to the full dose for dinner. We were told to give a 1/4 dose for the first week. The second week, we gave 1/2 dose. Third week 3/4 dose and finally full dose on the fourth week. Next we added periactin to his second worst meal of the day which was lunch. Again we use the same schedule as above. All in all it took almost 3 months get on periactin for 3 meals a day. I hope this helps.
