I have been reading that you guys in US have a med called Prevacid that we don´t have here in Sweden. Do you know if that is the same kind of medicin as Losec??? If not what is the different? We are trying to put Mattias on Losec instead of Zantac. But if it is the same kind as Prevacid I would like to try to give him Losec in the morning and Zantac in the evening. //// Thanks!!! Guest guest Posted October 9, 2003 Report Share Posted October 9, 2003 Dear Mattias's mother, I did some Google research on your question and here is what I found. Losec is not Prevacid, it is Prolisec. These meds are different but perform the same function. Both are Proton Pump Inhibitors, which means that they prevent the production of excess stomach acid before it happens by 'turning off the pumps' inside the stomach that produce the acid. Zantac also reduces the amount of acid in the stomach, but works by a diffent method. My understanding is that you should not take both medications at the same time of the day, but that lots of our kids are prescribed both of them in the way that you describe, one in the morning and one in the evening. My own personal experience as a person with Reflux is that Zantac is a relief, certainly, but that the PPI's are stronger and provide me with more complete relief from symptoms. I hope this helps.
