UC and C-Sections

To all the moms out there,

I'm currently pregnant and am trying to weigh the options of whether or not to

go the c-section route due to my UC. My fear is that if I choose to have the

baby vaginally and it tears into my rectum, how will that effect my ability to

control my bowels in those " I've GOT to go " moments during a flare.

Questions:

1) Do most moms with UC opt for c-sections?

2) Do you have UC and have had a successful vaginal birth?

3) Did giving birth vaginally impact your bowel control during a flare?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Vicki,

I had both my children vaginally and didn't have any problems as far as UC goes. I had a some vaginal tearing and hemorrhoids the first time due to the pushing, but I think tearing of the rectum would be extremely rare. I flared in the middle of both pregnancies I think due to such great hormonal changes. I would take the natural route if you can, I've heard that it takes much longer to heal from c sections. Have you talked to your dr?

Hi Vicki,

COngrats! When are you due?

Both my girls deliveries have been scheduled c/s's. My ob consulted with my GI

doc and they agreed it was in my best interest. I have had 3 surgeries before

age 16, including a colostomy and reversal of colostomy, resulting in the

remaining section of colon being reattached at my rectum. Tearing concerns, and

general tightness in that region were the influencing factors. A dx of crohn's

(which I have) or UC alone is usually not the case for c/s. as the opinion of my

OB whom I trust and even was saying to do a vaginal birth until I mentioned he

should talk to my GI as my GI and I had previously discussed it, after that he

concurred with that decision 100% and during my first c/s saw first hand that it

was the best thing for me. I hope you can find great docs as they make all the

difference.

I took imuran through both pregnancies but didn't nurse either baby becuase of

it, I had no flares.

Feel free to message me off list if you like too.
