AH! We just had this problem today. My husband took my son to preschool ( 3

days/wk,

4 hours a day) for the first time and I knew it wasn't going to go great because

my son was

already shaking his head no no no at me when I mentioned school. Luke (2 1/2)

loved it

last week but is not happy about going this week. He cried so hard on Monday

that I

thought he was sick so I took him home. Well I guess he cried the whole time he

was

there today and didn't calm down until the end when my husband put some earplugs

in (in

Luke, not his own ears!). I think this is due to his Sensory Integration issues

though. He is

overstimulated by noise and there's a lot of it in his preschool room. High

celings and

echo-y walls. I really can't see a point where I can actually leave him there

and go home.

I am going to keep taking him though so he learns that he can't get out of it.

Also, he has

been talking more than ever since we started last week. He started naming his

colors

(bwoo, reh, wehwo) and using his voice to ask for things (hel(p), dow(n)) so I

am definitely

going to make him keep at it for at least another month. I don't know if you

can stay with

your son but I'm going to stay as long as they need me to stay, and even longer

than that!

I do feel like I'm torturing him though. I do hear that a lot of boys aren't

really ready until

they're 4. That is totally my son so I do wonder if this is unnecesary torture

or are the

speech gains worth the pain? Feel free to email me for support!

Hi Janice,

My advice to you is hang in there! My daughter started the same sort of

preschool in Septmeber and she cried everytime i dropped her off for 4 months!

It was heart wrenching..but everytime i dropped her off and walked out, i

reminded myself how important it is. it may take 2 weeks or 6 or 12..but he

will adjust! Some kids, like my daughter for example take an extra long time to

adjust to a new social situation and he also may know that the teachers may have

trouble understanding him (which my daughter did). But do hang in there..i feel

your pain!

hello is there there a bus or van that he can ride because my boy friend took

my son to school one day and he cryed and wouldnt let my boy friend but if the

van comes and picks him up he ok he gets on the van and looks out the window and

waves by

Is your child receiving any type of sensory diet activities during

his time at preschool?

If yes, be very careful and find out EXACTLY what they are doing

during the day. Ask them to provide you with what they are doing -

that way you will hear it from them and not feed them with

suggestions of " are you doing ____ " ?

My child was being TERRIBLY overstimulated while at preschool. We

had a well established sensory diet in place. When he began

preschool, after the first week he became withdrawn and began

exhibiting sensory and anti-social behaviors we had never seen

before. The school and the private therapists kept saying " oh, he'll

get used to it, it's just an adjustment period " .

By the end of the 3rd week (he had attended a total of 9 days), he

was nearly catatonic. We asked his teacher to spell out the sensory

diet he was receiving. I was SHOCKED when I saw it - they were

torturing this poor child with THREE TIMES the amount of sensory

stimulation that he was accustomed to receiving on a daily basis.

For example, he was accustomed to being swung on the therapy swing

once daily. They asked me to swing him before school - which I did.

That should have been his only swinging of the day. They were

swinging him THREE MORE TIMES in a 3 hour period - and they were

forcing him into the swing (they actually wrote this down). Same for

brushing - too often. They were using a weighted vest - which we did

not use at home or during his private OT. This is after his private

OT and I told them at the IEP meeting what his daily sensory needs

were.

Needless to say, he never returned to the school. This was before we

had our apraxia with SID diagnosis. He was classified as

speech/language impaired, but they had him in a class with all

autistic children and were treating him as such. It all goes to show

that a correct diagnosis is worth it's weight in gold...but I

digress...

If you think your child is behaving in such a way that may be a

little more than just an adjustment to a new routine - ask that they

provide exactly what he is experiencing while there. His tears may

be telling you more than you think.

I actually did check into transportation today. There is a van that

could pick him up. I'm just really leary about doing that right now

because I think he'd be upset in someone coming and taking him. The

teacher doesnt recommend it right now. They recommend letting the

bus take him HOME first - but when I checked into that they told me

he'd have to ride a regular school bus full of kids of all ages -

middle school, high school, etc.

I guess I should say he isnt crying when I pick him up. They tell me

he does settle down. I've tried to get there a little early and peek

in at him and he's either with the other kids working on something

or in line getting his coat on to go. Then he is happy to see me and

immediately starts pointing out to me the clock, plant, etc.

They do send home a little " daily report " about what they did that

day. I think its mainly just structured play. Like one day they

played with play doh, one day it was shaving cream, one day they did

a puzzle, and they always do some little drawing or craft to send

home. Like Monday they made hearts for valentines.

I do want to give it a fair shot. I think I'll at least try keeping

with the current schedule until the end of the month and see if

things improve much by then.

Like I said this week will be the first week he goes two days in a

row (wed and thurs) so I'll see if that makes things better or

worse, LOL.

My preschool disabled program offered a bus, but I turned it down b/c

no one was able to wait with him at the bus stop which was my home.

His older siblings needed to be driven to their schools and it was a

conflict, so the district allowed me to drop off and pick up.

Our school also offered an open door policy. If you would like to

spend some time in the classroom you were more than welcome to visit

and experience his 1:1 speech and/or OT. Observe the classroom

morning circle, snack time, etc. Being able to put a face with a

name also was helpful. I took my disposable camera with me and the

teacher and aides and therapists allowed me to take their pics so

when my child forgot that persons name he would be able to look it up

in his album of friends book.

Some districts may have to bus with older children but in NJ

transportation for Preschool Special Ed is only for preschool which

could be ages 5-9 with an assistant on the bus that holds no more

than 8 special ed passengers. All must come with carseats until they

turn 8.

NJ has a PRISE (Parental Rights In special Ed) booklet

check to see if your state also may have these rights. Do a google

search on special ed in your state, parental rights, preschool

special ed transportation, etc.

Hi,

One more thing I would add, if you're not already doing this, is to

make sure your good-byes are short & sweet. If you linger then that

just adds to their anxiety (they pick up on our anxiety, why are we

lingering, there must be something wrong, Mommy doesn't want to leave

me for some reason, etc.). Just bring them to the teacher, give them

a happy hug/kiss & " I love you. You're going to play now and I'll

pick you up later. " & quick leave. It sounds like your son is making

progress already (went from crying for a half an hour to whining off

& on- that's progress)! :)
