Guest guest
Flagyl is an antibiotic (not a fungicide as someone misspoke on this list). It is a serious antibiotic with lots of neurological side effects and it can also create superbacterias in your body. So do NOT take it unless you test positive for a specific bacteria that it works against. The best protection against any bacteria, etc., is good health and good nutrition. The good bacteria in your body can be helped by eating unsweetened yogurt (I like it as a dip with meat or vegetables--mix a cup of the plain with a tbsp of your favorite dressing or dip). Or you can eat one like Blue Bunny 85. This is very healthy and is tolerated even by those of us who are lactose intolerant. Build your health with good nutrition and save the antibiotics for when they can specifically kill a bacteria that is found through a culture. Guest guest
Flagyl (metronidazol) is an " antimicrobial, " and it is used against single-celled protozoan diseases (trichomoniasis, Giiardiasis, others) in addition to bacteria. It is used widely in the Third World where poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water promote intestinal diseases. In the US, where the drinking water is generally safe, it is used mainly against [vaginal] trichomoniasis, which is probably why my PCP was incredulous when I told him that my WLS had prescribed Flagyl for my gas. ALCOHOL MUST NOT BE TAKEN WITH FLAGYL! Flagyl has an extremely bitter taste, so it is wise to have something sweet to eat or to drink after you take one (it can be artificially sweetened). For some people (not for me) it leaves a metallic aftertaste. Like any other medicine, Flagyl is not to be toyed with, but it is not regarded as a dangerous drug either. And, by the way, it is also inexpensive--I forget exactly how much, but it was under $20 for the 30-day course, maybe more like $10 or $15. I took it as 250 mg, 3x/day for 30 days when I had terrible gas about five months post-op. I replaced the good bacteria in my gut with an acidophilus culture (Solgar Advanced 40+ capsules, in the refrigerated section of health food stores, about $20 for 120 capsules), spaced a few hours from each Flagyl. I still take one acidophilus capsule daily, though I may not really need it (I am 21 months post-op). --Steve At 6:35 PM +0000 2/8/03, Corrine Grantwit GRANTWIT@...> wrote: >Good call on the use of FLAGYL, Judy.
