Guest guest
Hi family, Have a few questions about coffee. In the morning I have 2/3 cups of coffee..would tea be better? Is tea hard on the pouch too? Now about the delicate part......besides the diuretic effect of coffee..hell, I might as well brew the stuff and dump it down the toilet..cut out the middle man.. it has been causing me diarrhea..or loose stool..does anyone else have this problem? Thanks,
Guest guest
: I think I heard that there's something soothing in tea. And there's such a huge variety, I bet you could find a good stomach-soothing one. But, I do know the very first stuff that goes in the pouch in the morning is tricky for me. I usually have a worse response to really cold stuff, even water, and I find a big cup of half-caf coffee very agreeable. Also, I don't know how " far out " you are, but things are always changing still. in Austin RNY April 1998 delicate question about coffee > Hi family, Have a few questions about coffee. I was told to quit caffeine over a month pre-op, and I did. Post-op, I didn't have even decaf for probably 6 months. Guest guest
I am also a proud member of the Cup of Coffee in the morning club. I also need that jump-start in the morning. I also enjoy drinking a good cup of coffee with SF Syrup. I would not be happy if I had to completely give it up...I used to be a pot a day person so I think I am doing exceptionally well only having one cup (grin) I am very regular...don't know if it is the coffee or the oatmeal with flaxseed, but I am not complaining! Guest guest
Lyn, As long as we are confessing.. I was working on my 3 month chip post-op when I fell off the wagon. Decaf wasn't my thing, I love the International coffee-like substance. I've weaned myself off that and onto regular coffee with s/f syrup. I justify it by adding more water to prevent dehydration. I've been known to do a pot a day. (hanging my head in shame) Oh well, so much for true confessions. Guest guest
Wait a darned minute. WHAT THE HECK BRAND OF COFFEE ARE YOU USING?!?!? I want it! It's brown liquids that are problems. Coffee, tea, cola, caf or decaf. Still helps oxalate kidney stones form, and still causes us to pee out more of the calcium we take in. Don't shoot the messenger! Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
My first year postop I drank absolutely NO coffee!! And it was living hell!! I'm ashamed to say that I drink about 2 pots of coffee a day. And it has absolutely nothing to do with my heart palpitations or skipping 2 or 3 beats!! Ok, so maybe it does...so I'm trying to mix my leaded with unleaded. Why do we drink coffee so much? I'm thinking simply because it tastes good. It's virtually no calorie, it warms the belly and gives pleasure (more if I put SF syrups in!) In my own defense, I do get in my water most days as well. And yes....I'm a regular peeing machine!! Guest guest
If you were able to drink caffeinated beverages before surgery, there is little reason to stop after surgery. There is little evidence that caffeine is a diuretic, see http://www.cosic.org/caffeine/diureticeffects/ There is some evidence that caffeine can reduce calcium retention, but this is what calcium supplements are for. Guest guest
Might I suggest that this phenomenon is not absolutely connected to coffee? I NEVER drink coffee (they may throw me out of the Seattle suburbs yet) but the first liquid I drink in the morning always " gets things going " after the first four to six ounces, no matter what beverage it is. That means I DO NOT drink my first liquid of the day in the car... Don't need that particular agony. Checked out some of the other info available and I can't prove it, but from what I read, it would seem to me that this is an organization deeply involved in the promotion of coffee growing and trading internationally, and any studies reported or funded by them would be, in my opinion, highly suspect for this reason--despite the claim that all the info they gather is provided by " independent sources " etc. I guess all the docs who've told me that caffeine is a diuretic have fallen prey to " urban myth " or some such thing. Even if it were NOT diuretic, however, there are plenty of good reasons to avoid it. First of all, caffeine is a poison. I learned this 20 years ago, in an intensive, 6-week inpatient program for my " eating disorder " where we were totally immersed in nutritional education. Heavy coffee drinkers and users of other types of caffeine actually experience withdrawal symptoms (mainly headache) which would be an indication that it is addictive. In that same program, we were presented with several studies that supported the premise that caffeine is an appetite stimulant. It certainly stimulates the nervous system, which anyone who drinks a lot of coffee can attest to. And finally, urologists are pretty much unanimous in their belief that the oxalates in brown liquids (many of which also contain caffeine) are contributors to the formation of kidney stones. I love a good cup of coffee, and I don't deny myself totally. But even before I had WLS, I had cut down to just an occasional cup as a rare treat. I esp like it with a shot of hazelnut flavoring and sugar-free cocoa. Eveyone's free to make their own decisions regarding caffeine. But when you're weighing the evidence, make sure you know WHO is putting forth the data. If it's an association of coffee growers or their agent(s), I'd not consider it very reliable evidence. Guest guest
> Heavy coffee drinkers and users of other types of > caffeine actually experience withdrawal symptoms (mainly headache) which would be an indication that it is addictive. ******************** It is a drug, I have no doubt. I'm a die-hard coffee drinker, but for the past 15 years or so, I no longer have caffeine past noon or it keeps me awake. However, many years ago, on one of my many diets, I did give up caffeine for a few weeks. I had no withdrawal symptoms, other than typical cravings, but then, one morning at work, I just wanted a cup of the real thing. Well, it was like I had been shot up with a drug, a good one, too. I felt like I was energized, flying on air, possibly like some feel after a much-needed B12 shot. That's when I knew what drug addiction was. That said, I just love the taste, and I won't give up my 2 cups in the morning. But, that's it for the caffeine...I don't do diet sodas or caffenated tea, either. Medical journal sites are given for the statements made. Caffeine tends to loosen the bladder sphincter muscle which in turn can result in more frequent urination, but not necessarily more urine being passed.
