Hi family, Have a few questions about coffee. In the morning I have 2/3 cups

of coffee..would tea be better? Is tea hard on the pouch too?

Now about the delicate part......besides the diuretic effect of

coffee..hell, I might as well brew the stuff and dump it down the toilet..cut

out the middle man..:) it has been causing me diarrhea..or loose stool..does

anyone else have this problem? Thanks,

I think I heard that there's something soothing in tea. And there's such a

huge variety, I bet you could find a good stomach-soothing one. But, I do

know the very first stuff that goes in the pouch in the morning is tricky

for me. I usually have a worse response to really cold stuff, even water,

and I find a big cup of half-caf coffee very agreeable. Also, I don't know

how " far out " you are, but things are always changing still.

Your response could have been written by ME. Coffee is the one

thing I could not give up -- and refuse to.

I have one cup each morning... and only one. It jumpstarts my day!

And like you and , it cleans me out -- before the one cup is

even finished. I, too, have no idea about the who, what, and whys of

coffee, but I just take it at face value. Now there are three of us

in this club... and probably more! Deb

Guess I'll join too... I was sneaking into the nurses station the morning

after my surgery to steal a cup of " real " coffee (ok, now you all think you

know my deepest secrets ;-)) Now, more than two years later I still have my

morning coffee and it " moves " me gently right along (how's that for delicate

BM talk?) each morning.

I qualify...

I'm guilty here too, and there's no good excuse for it. I was told to quit

caffeine over a month pre-op, and I did. Post-op, I didn't have even decaf for

probably 6 months. Then I started getting the Starbucks decaf lattés, (fat free

milk, sugar fee syrup), and soon they were an everyday thing (I had a better job

then! LOL!) One day I was really dragging butt and decided to go for caffeine.

It wasn't long before decaf was a vague memory, and I have been hooked since.

Now my husbane has high blood pressure, so we've switched to decaf at home, but

as soon as I hit the office I'm into the high-octane stuff. I'm a bad child,

that's all there is to it.

What I want to know is, if coffee is supposed to stunt your growth (vertically)

why doesn't it work horizontally? ROFL!

And as to its effects on my digestive system, ditto. It's better than Ex-lax.

Ok, Vita-Mom, now you know why I buy way more sugar-free syrup than protein

powder -- it's for the coffee!! :::hangs head in shame:::

The Gingerbread syrup is to DIE FOR!

Me, too. I just can't function without my morning jolt. Decaf just

doesn't cut it, not to mention it just tastes yucky to me.

I am also a proud member of the Cup of Coffee in the morning club. I

also need that jump-start in the morning. I also enjoy drinking a

good cup of coffee with SF Syrup. I would not be happy if I had to

completely give it up...I used to be a pot a day person so I think I

am doing exceptionally well only having one cup (grin)

I am very regular...don't know if it is the coffee or the oatmeal

with flaxseed, but I am not complaining!

Lyn,

As long as we are confessing.. I was working on my 3 month chip post-op when

I fell off the wagon. Decaf wasn't my thing, I love the International

coffee-like substance. I've weaned myself off that and onto regular coffee

with s/f syrup. I justify it by adding more water to prevent dehydration.

I've been known to do a pot a day. (hanging my head in shame)

Oh well, so much for true confessions.

Wait a darned minute. WHAT THE HECK BRAND OF COFFEE ARE YOU USING?!?!? I

want it!

It's brown liquids that are problems. Coffee, tea, cola, caf or decaf.

Still helps oxalate kidney stones form, and still causes us to pee out more

of the calcium we take in.

Don't shoot the messenger!

My first year postop I drank absolutely NO coffee!! And it was living hell!!

I'm ashamed to say that I drink about 2 pots of coffee a day. And it has

absolutely nothing to do with my heart palpitations or skipping 2 or 3 beats!!

Ok, so maybe it does...so I'm trying to mix my leaded with unleaded.

Why do we drink coffee so much? I'm thinking simply because it tastes good.

It's virtually no calorie, it warms the belly and gives pleasure (more if I put

SF syrups in!)

In my own defense, I do get in my water most days as well. And yes....I'm a

regular peeing machine!! (not that you needed to know that!)

If you were able to drink caffeinated beverages before surgery, there is

little reason to stop after surgery. There is little evidence that

caffeine is a diuretic, see

http://www.cosic.org/caffeine/diureticeffects/

There is some evidence that caffeine can reduce calcium retention, but

this is what calcium supplements are for.

Uh, sign me up too. I must have my coffee and my husband, being

though but in the morning, we have the high test. Gotta have it to

Might I suggest that this phenomenon is not absolutely connected to

coffee? I NEVER drink coffee (they may throw me out of the Seattle

suburbs yet) but the first liquid I drink in the morning always " gets

things going " after the first four to six ounces, no matter what

beverage it is. That means I DO NOT drink my first liquid of the day in

the car... Don't need that particular agony.

You're probably right. It's just that first cup is soooo good, I

just can't give it up.

High test hehehe..

Same here... I at least have soy milk in my 5-shot venti lattes from

Starbucks...I can pretend I'm getting some nutritional benefit, and I'm

getting used to the withering looks from the counter help....

I thought that was the whole purpose of coffee! Otherwise I'd just

stick to iced tea all the darn time.

Tried to visit the above site and it says that page does not exist and the

thing is being " reorganised " (British spelling, by the way).

Checked out some of the other info available and I can't prove it, but from

what I read, it would seem to me that this is an organization deeply involved

in the promotion of coffee growing and trading internationally, and any

studies reported or funded by them would be, in my opinion, highly suspect

for this reason--despite the claim that all the info they gather is provided

by " independent sources " etc.

I guess all the docs who've told me that caffeine is a diuretic have fallen

prey to " urban myth " or some such thing. Even if it were NOT diuretic,

however, there are plenty of good reasons to avoid it. First of all, caffeine

is a poison. I learned this 20 years ago, in an intensive, 6-week inpatient

program for my " eating disorder " where we were totally immersed in

nutritional education. Heavy coffee drinkers and users of other types of

caffeine actually experience withdrawal symptoms (mainly headache) which

would be an indication that it is addictive. In that same program, we were

presented with several studies that supported the premise that caffeine is an

appetite stimulant. It certainly stimulates the nervous system, which anyone

who drinks a lot of coffee can attest to. And finally, urologists are pretty

much unanimous in their belief that the oxalates in brown liquids (many of

which also contain caffeine) are contributors to the formation of kidney

stones.

I love a good cup of coffee, and I don't deny myself totally. But even before

I had WLS, I had cut down to just an occasional cup as a rare treat. I esp

like it with a shot of hazelnut flavoring and sugar-free cocoa. Eveyone's

free to make their own decisions regarding caffeine. But when you're weighing

the evidence, make sure you know WHO is putting forth the data. If it's an

association of coffee growers or their agent(s), I'd not consider it very

reliable evidence.

Not only do I not drink much coffee (don't worry, I make up for it with diet

coke), but I OBVIOUSLY was using the wrong brand. Never had this effect on

me. Darn it.

It is a drug, I have no doubt. I'm a die-hard coffee drinker, but

for the past 15 years or so, I no longer have caffeine past noon or

it keeps me awake. However, many years ago, on one of my many diets,

I did give up caffeine for a few weeks. I had no withdrawal

symptoms, other than typical cravings, but then, one morning at work,

I just wanted a cup of the real thing. Well, it was like I had been

shot up with a drug, a good one, too. I felt like I was energized,

flying on air, possibly like some feel after a much-needed B12 shot.

That's when I knew what drug addiction was.

That said, I just love the taste, and I won't give up my 2 cups in

the morning. But, that's it for the caffeine...I don't do diet sodas

or caffenated tea, either.

The site worked perfectly when I tried it just now. Medical journal

sites are given for the statements made. Caffeine tends to loosen the

bladder sphincter muscle which in turn can result in more frequent

urination, but not necessarily more urine being passed.

Okay guys. I will admit to coffee as well. I never drank more in my life

since my marriage to that Dane though...lol. How the heck else am I gonna

stay warm in this frozen place?..lol. I swear though, it goes STRAIGHT

through me. Don't think I'm strange but when I go, the bathroom smells of

coffee. It has to be running straight through. I know anyone else would

think I'm nutts!
