Guest guest
Hi to all, I have a question/problem I'm hoping you all can help with. I recently found out that my 7 yr old who we thought was n/t is having some o/t issues and I think some language processing problems. This has been a really rough year for him, he has a teacher who is not very warm ( cold as a fish!!!!) and he is very affectionate, he also has sleep apnea which causes some real behavior problems as he is often very tired early in the day.His teacher has decided he is going to do things her way period! She seems incapable of offering any options in order to help him succeed. We had an I.E.P. about 2 wks ago and it went okay, the problem is his class has a field trip coming up and his teacher sent home a note saying that if we wanted Nick to go on the field trip either my husband or I must go. I'm FURIOUS!!!!!! I normally do go on any field trips but this one happens to be 3 days before Easter and we own a florist so its just not possible. I feel its completely inappropriate to single out a child who is already having problems " fitting in " . He sees a counselor at school and she agrees with me that singling him out would not be good for him but understands the teachers concern about not being able to handle him if he has what we call a " melt down " .Any ideas on how to handle this and do you think this could be construed as discrimination??? Sorry to be so long but I've just fumed about this all week. (And on top of this the poor little guy had to have surgery on Tuesday to remove tonsils and adenoids because of the sleep apnea. ) Thanks for letting me vent and any suggestions, Valarie in Ca ( mom to Maranda 6yr old asd and Nick 7yr old o/t issues , sleep apnea and LPD)
Guest guest
I can't believe that the teacher said that to you. Maybe they could have an extra aide from the school go along to be with him. I remember when my son would have meltdowns and when I would show up to volunteer for a field trip he would be a 100 times worse not better because on top of not being able to handle the fieldtrip itself he also couldn't handle me being there. I think that was very rude of her to suggest that in such a manner. If they expect us to be nice and understanding of what they do then these schools better start doing the same. I hope he gets to go and that he has a good time. Pooh on that teacher ! MA
Guest guest
Valarie, This is awful! I would ask and see if there isn't some other adult in the school who could accompany your child--social worker, slp, guidance counselor--on the trip. Or perhaps there is another mom in the class (preferably someone you know) who would be willing to go along as an extra chaperone to be there for your son. This would make me furious too. It is one thing if you offer to go along on the trip, but for them to demand it, I think that is out of line. I hope it works out so he can go on the trip. Guest guest
Thanks, and Becky I appreciate the advice and support. I was prepared to fight tooth and nail for servives for my daughter but I didn't realize I would have to fight for my son also. So be it . With the support I get from you all I know I can do it it would just be nice to be pleasantly surprised sometimes not to have to fight for what is right. Guest guest
, I believe keeping your child from a field trip because of his disability is ILLEGAL according to federal law. FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education) requires that they provide him with the supports he needs to benifit from his education in the LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT. Banning him from and educational field trip restricts his environment. YOU DO NOT have to accompany him for him to be allowed to go. THEY have to provide an aide, if that's what it takes. Tell them that. They already know it. They just think you don't. Good luck- in FL > >
Guest guest
Valarie Ditto to the other responders on this one. This is BS. Your child cannot be excluded and they should provide an aide in required in this situation. This is total BS. I feel bad that they are making you request what is right for your child vs. giving children what they need. Talk to the principal in a nice way first, then get mad and do the IEP dance. Good luck A jeffs mom Re: off topic Hi to all, I have a question/problem I'm hoping you all can help with. Guest guest
Just wanted to share a small victory with you all. I talked to my sons teacher today ( the one who wasn't giong to let hm go on the field trip with out my husband or I going along) It appears they found an aid to go along. Good thing as I had decided that I was going to tell them if Nick had epilepsy they would not exclude him from the field trip because he might have a seizure, and Nick has just about the same control over his " melt downs " so if they did'nt want to be looking at a discrimination suit they had better figure out how to make it work!!!!!! Finally a battle one before the fight began! Thanks for all your support and input, Valarie in Ca

Guest guest
Jac, I am so very sorry to hear that your sweetheart was activated. I don't even know what to say it is a hard thing to have to go through. My brother is in the Air Force and he was supposed to be getting out in May. He was told he wouldn't be having to go anywhere, but a week before Christmas they called him up and told him he was going over the the Persian Gulf and get packed. My mom was devastated, still is. He is doing okay over there though. Anyways, lots of hugs, Chandra

Goddess Bless you and yours. Please stay in touch with us here. I know this sounds off topic but it isn't. I can't imagine the fears, worry and anxiety but can only guess it is going to be an emotional roller coaster (which will affect your relationship with food so it is on topic) and please keep us updated or just share or whatever you need for support just ask. Where was he called? My friend wasn't told beyond reporting to CA but he was vaccinated with a lot of new stuff. Wish I could hug you but will send virtual hugs and know you are in my heart. Last time I looked, sex--oral or otherwise--does not make for a bad CEO. Had the media paid more attention to the positives in Clinton's administration instead of the sensationalism that sells papers, airtime, etc. maybe so many people would not be so misinformed on just what the man DID accomplish in office. And this comes from someone (me) who did NOT vote for Clinton, and who was a staunch non-supporter when he took office. And I guess I'd rather have a proponent of oral sex running the corporation than someone hellbound to take away my profit-sharing and pension plan money so I can't retire but have to keep working as a senior citizen in order to just live above the poverty-line. @@@@@@@@@@@@ Jeez, don't you folks not remember what happened on 9/11/01. Hey if you think that cannot happen again, (or God forbid something even much worse) then you are (excuse the expression) " crazy as hell " . -------------------------------- Iraq in general, and Saddam Hussein in particular were not responsible for 9/11. And I am very certain that something similar can and probably will happen again. All u have to do is look at what goes on with terrorism against the Israelis to know that. Getting rid of Saddam will have no effect whatsoever on the kind of terrorism that occurred on 9/11. Let Bush PROVE (this IS the land of innocent until proven guilty, is it not?) the guy has all these " weapons of mass destruction " and I will be the first to say " send in the troops " or " drop the bomb. " But not to prevent another 9/11. Just to enforce what the United Nations has put forth. @@@@@@@@@@@@ I am sad to hear that we may have to send our fighting men and women off to war, but it is equally sad to be sitting at your desk in the World Trade Center one bright September morning and have a 747 fly into the building. It is the price we must pay for living in the greatest country in the world. I disagree strongly with everything you said, but I abd a lot of other brave men and women will fight to the death to defend your right to say it. ------------------------------- Again, war with Iraq will not prevent a 747 from flying into your office building (or some other such individually-committed act of terrorism). I appreciate your willingness to fight for my right to disagree with you. I'm not so sure I'd be so generous. But then, I don't have to worry about it. I'm too old to be drafted, if conscription were to come back again; and even if it did and I were younger, I'm not so sure women have been liberated to the point that they'd draft US. Point is, it's easy to say one would fight if not likely to be called upon to do so. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Like it or not, he is our Commander in Chief, if you don't agree with what is going on in this country. the last time I checked, you certainly had the right to leave it, the borders at Canada and Mexico are wide open and you certainly can fly the friendly skys if you need more distance between us. ------------------------------------- Oh, that's a good way to solve problems. Just pick up and leave. I don't think it's quite what the founding fathers had in mind tho when they rebelled against British rule and demanded a representative government. We do have a better option: make our opinions known to the prez and our legislators. And if they don't listen to us, vote 'em out of office. ASAP. @@@@@@@@@@@ I hear Sodamn Insane (Hussein) is looking for a few new citizens, since he seems to like to drop nerve gas on the ones he already has. ----------------------------------- Nasty, Bill. Very nasty. On a par with my country: love it or leave it. Is this what you do with someone you love? Abandonment, banishment, no attempt to work thru to a viable solution when disagreements occur? Those of us who would prefer to have less bloodshed for ALL the world can just go live in Iraq? Probably you'd make a good leader there to replace the current one. Carol A With apologies to the list for prolonging this OT subject. Just could NOT let this pass.

Guest guest
Ok, I appologize. I shouldn't have started anything....I was having a pissy morning and I came out in my fingers. Just for General information....I was a Navy wife for 25 years and my daughter was FOURTH generation Navy in our family. My Brother is still active duty...A Marine! We are proud of our country and proud of serving our country (Dad did 22 year, ex husband did 30...all Dad's brothers served, as did my Grandfather!). But this doesn't mean I have to agree with every President. That said, I should NOT have been such a B**CH this morning. Guest guest
I just took Fred to Camp Gruber for activation today. I don't care what Bush says right now. I can be angry (and I am). I think we waited too long to do anything, I can't imagine telling any other culture how they should live if it is different from us, and I can't understand telling anyone that the weapons they have are unwarranted if they are the same damned weapons we have. BUT, on the other hand, my heart has been ripped out, and I don't have anyone to blame or scream at. Because I THINK I understand. Hell, I was a cop for 23 years. The Murrah Building was in my patrol district. I should understand all of this, or just be able to take it in stride. I did better today. I didn't cry. Not one single minute. But I was numb. The whole day long. On my way home, Fred called me on the cell phone, and not 20 seconds after I answered, I had a blow out on the right rear tire of the truck. His truck. I didn't have a clue about what to do. I can change a tire, IF I KNOW HOW TO GET THE DAMNED SPARE DOWN. I didn't blow up. But I wanted to. For just a few seconds, I swelled up. I choked down the tears, and I said, " Honey, I have to take care of this. " Fortunately, a nice man stopped and helped me. I was back on the road home in less than 30 minutes. He's going to Turkey (unofficial so far), and will be a squad leader in an intelligence unit. Deployment date is 2/6 (after the UN investigation is " complete " on the 5th). So far, I've lost 5 of the 10 pounds I wanted to lose, but it's from just not eating, not a plan. Funny how your habits change. Thanks to you all for being there for me. I guess it was part of God's plan for you to come to me when I needed you so much.
