Guest guest
I wrote this (Barbara Jean from Ferndale). Sorry, what I wrote was a gross simplification of what I do. Protein, food, vitamins is just the sequence for how I do it. I don't do them immediately after each other. I do between 5 and 7 shake as day (usually 5). I have to get in 150 mg of protein just to maintain. If I am very physically active or under a lot of stress, I drink more. The amount of protein depends on what kind of surgery you had and what your individual body needs. I had a distal gastric bypass. Actually, my shakes aren't very big. I just use 4 oz of water with each. Also, different people's pouches are different sizes. Although I started with a 2 oz pouch, I am a year and a half past my revision, and have stretched is some. When get up in the morning I have a shake. Then I take a shower and do morning stuff. By then I am ready to eat (usually an hour after the shake). I take my vitamins as soon after this as I can, because they sit better with me if I don't take them on a totally empty stomach. I usually have to wait a bout 1/2 hour before I can take my vits. Then I wait between an hour and three hours and start the sequence again and so on. I take a lot of meds along with my vitamins, so I take pills 8 times a day. I just fit in the extra when I can. I sometimes only eat three times a day so I don't always take my pills after eating, but I do all I can to get in the 5 shakes. Also, whenever I am hungry, no matter where I am in the cycle or how many proteins I have had that day, I first do a protein shake before I eat. I try to never eat when I am starving, but do a shake instead and then eat. In the past, I have used at least eight different charts and logs that I have made up to keep track of all of this. On one of them I accounted for every 1/2 hour. They all drove me crazy, and I never could do them right. The protein, food, vitamins is just a way for me to make it simple so that I don't overwhelm myself. Sometimes my perfectionism makes my life way too complicated. Of course, with my method, there are times when I get busy and end up ready to go to bed, and still have 2 proteins and three sets of pills to take. It happens less and less often, as I go along and get used to the rhythm. I figure if I can get it down to screwing up only once every couple of weeks, I'm doing great. So, I hope that sort of answers your question. Sometimes, when I write posts I keep my words down to a minimum, because, I could easily write a novel with each post. I do enjoy the sound of the word " verbose " but I try not to do that any more than absolutely necessary. Hah! I'm glad you wrote to ask me about it. I get my vitamins on top of a protein shake and can usually eat food about an hour later... my shakes are usually only about 12 oz of liquid and my food portions stay at about 1/2 cup or less if dense meat -- it keeps my body on a steady feeling of satisfied so I don't get real hungry or real full -- just in the middle. Keeps my energy levels up with the added bonus of not forgetting my vitamins because they " go with " my protein and protein with vitamins (except iron) so I don't forget either of them. 6 a.m. shake/vitamins 8-9 a.m. breakfast 11 a.m. shake/vitamins 1 p.m. lunch 3 p.m. shake 5 p.m. shake 7 p.m. dinner 9 p.m. shake If I go to the gym or other workout that makes me feel " hungry " I toss another shake in there following that activity -- If I get the hungry or feeling that I want to " munch " in-between then I choose a free-food -- I use the breakfast, lunch and dinner parts to make sure I get in enough good high end carbs, grains, fats and other " essentials " for balance or a bulk protein food (grilled chicken) to fill my pouch... Those " exact " hours are not always right on time -- I don't set a timer anymore although I did have to the first year... it is just an " idea " of how that blend works through the day and an " idea " of the timing that allows me to get enough protein and foods so everything is balanced. Works great for me too... hugz, ~denise
Guest guest
I am going to try this religiously. There is no doubt in my mind that I need a " plan " or I lose it! I was a " poster child " for my doc and WLS for over a year and now I am at goal and able to graze and get away with it and have introduced too many carbs and sugar-free syrups into my life (which I believe create the cravings). What is it about us that makes us think we can be " normal " ??? Why can't I just accept that I will always be like the alcoholic and have a sick mind about food? I know in my head that I get away with grazing and more carbs because I work out alot and have a busy lifestyle, but I do worry about year 3, 4, 5 yadda yadda. How long can I stay a " working out fool " ?? " sigh " Carol G > >>> I was taught this by a very smart, very successful WLS person.
