Guest guest
Hey group, I want to lose another 30 or so pounds and I've been weak when it comes to a regular exercise regimen Anyway... I'd like your feed back on what I'm doing so far...all comments are welcome & thank you in advance for reading this.. Sunday: went to the gym (I'm not a member, just used a freebie pass), I rode their stationary bike for 15 mins, 2 sets of 10 reps on their hip oblique machine, 3 sets of 10 reps on their leg press, 2 sets of 10 reps on their arm/shoulder press (this almost killed me), stair-climber-torture-machine for 5 mins (I couldn't stand it any longer), changed into my swimsuit and swam 12 laps in their Olympic sized indoor pool, followed by a much needed Jacuzzi soak for a few minutes. Monday: walked 3 miles in 35 minutes! Whewie, I was soooo sore from yesterday! Tuesday (today): rode my bike in the neighborhood, measured the distance and it was only 3 miles I think I can do better then this, but I'm still sore from Sunday! I typically have a protein drink & at least 64 oz. of water before 11 a.m., then I exercise, then I have lunch (today I'm having turkey chili). Dinner is usually sensible sized meal of meat & a veggie/salad. Snacks have become a protein drink lately, this seems to help with my sugar cravings! Yippee! My stats are: VBG 05/01, started at 315, now I'm at 180 and fighting to lose 30 more. Oh, I forgot, I'm 43 (very young at heart) years old. Please give me some advise about how I can vary my exercise routine & tips on how you keep yourself motivated. I've looked at the pics in the files, and there are lots of successful WLS'ers out there...come on and share! I've done pretty well with my food issues (still fall down sometimes), but my exercise routine has mostly sucked. I wanna do better! Thanks- Rose Houston VBG 05/01 315/180 (want to shed another 30!) Guest guest
>>but my exercise routine has mostly sucked. I wanna do better! > Rose Hi Rose, IMNSHO ~smile~ all exercise routines that suck are the wrong ones. You did a lot of stuff -- did you enjoy any of it? Do you like to swim? Ride your bike? Did you enjoy walking? What do you like to do? Until you find something you really enjoy exercise is going to suck and it doesn't have to and I don't think it should. Moving your body should be fun. Do you like to dance? I love to dance but hate the bar scene thing so every afternoon when my 5 year old gets home I put in a CD with old rock and roll and we dance in the kitchen. I made my own CD's so they start kinda slow, then they get fast (sometimes I remember to check my heart rate but usually forget) and then they slow down and they all have music I like -- OH... I close ALL the curtains!!! I'm sure we look ridiculous but what the heck? Me and my kid are getting a good work-out and we laugh all the way through. It's fun, not exercise. In the summer I love to swim and so does my 5 year old so after her lessons we go swimming -- while she gets to have " play " time I do laps and I enjoy it, I enjoy the sunshine and the water and just going back and forth at my own pace... doing my own thing, relaxing and working most all the muscles in my body... it's fun, not exercise. Early mornings I wake up and do Yoga. I enjoy Yoga in the mornings. I face the East to greet the day and it is quiet and early and my body can move slowly into a heated workout or not depending on how I feel that day. My poses are chosen randomly to suit my mood but I find if the pose is held with a great deal of integrity it doesn't have to be a difficult work out to get great benefit from it. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I do a Yoga class and that is fun too. Ah, alas we have weights and weight baring exercises for us " older " women to maintain our bone. Ok, gotta fit those in on a regular basis throughout the week but I don't have to do them all in a day and I don't have to be in pain post-doing them. Slow reps with less weight I think are far more valuable that fast reps with more weight. What's fun about it? Not much actual " fun " about it so what I've discovered in it is solitude. I can let my mind be quiet for 30 minutes and work on the top or the bottom alternately -- I don't have to " think " about anything except to count slowly and breath deeply. I find that when I do yogic breathing with my reps my body tends to do a whole physical destress type of thing (unravel all those knots in my neck) and I am in a better mood / better frame of mind so it is kind of like taking a therapeutic bath... I just do it for me, woman, female, myself because it is good for me and I deserve it. Having shared all that I have got to be totally honest and admit that 'all that' has been most difficult for me to get started back post my Daddy's death last month. Obviously during the hospital stay none of the above happened, post the death I didn't feel like having fun and allowing myself time to mourn as needed I just have not gotten back to actually doing many fun things yet but I am working on it... slowly but progressively. Just to say we will not all be perfect all the time and " life happens " so that we are thrown off kilter some times and that is ok. It really is ok to not be perfect but it isn't ok to not enjoy our new life and new freedom's given to us with this surgery. I really feel like if we are not enjoying our new freedom of being able to actually " move " (exercise) then we should keep doing new things till we find those that we do enjoy and if we don't enjoy our protein shakes then we should keep trying new ones till we find ones we do enjoy and if we don't like our daily foods then we should keep searching till we find what we do enjoy. I don't know about y'all but I spent so many years doing things I didn't enjoy and for all the wrong reasons that I want to spend my days now enjoying this gift and enjoying all those around me and being enjoyable to them. Why should we have any less? hugz you all, ~denise

We often swam for about an hour to an hour and a half. Our signal that it was over is when one of us had to go to the bathroom. I too enjoy dancing and had not thought about the CD thing and just dancing at home. I also can not stand the bar scene. I think I'm just getting too old. I know when I was in rehab, there was this thing that I honestly thought was a toy. I made the mistake of asking about it and ended up having to use it. It was a football with two ropes strung through it. On each end of the ropes were handles. The object was to send the ball to the other person by spreading the ropes apart. You want to talk about an upper body work out. It really wasn't a mistake, it was fun. I think that is probably the key. Lori Owen - Denton, Texas CHF 4/14/01 479 lbs. SRVG 7/16/01 401 lbs. Guest guest
I don't think that an exercise has been invented that I don't hate. Haven't found one yet that I actually " enjoy " and for those endorphins, well I ain't ever found the little buggers. Swimming? Can't stand to have water in my face. Play in our pool but don't swim. Biking, nope makes my behind sore. Dancing? God forgot to give me anything that even resembles rhythm. Nothing that I do makes me want to do more but.....I have found something that I hate the least-weight training. I hired a personal trainer to help me learn how and still hire her for one day a week. The rest of time I do it on my own. Weight train on Mon, Wed., Fri. and do cardio on Tues., Thur. Hate it. Don't think that I'll ever really like or enjoy it but I make myself do it.
