Guest guest
Kerri, I imagine it would be hard for any of us to know that, other than calorie count. But there may be someone out there that has the answer. I'd like to hear it. I've wondered myself. Joan C, Calif. Guest guest
Lori, the way my surgeon explained it is " Your body has stored the nutrition it needs for many months; therefore, vitamin and protein supplements are not necessary for the first few weeks after surgery. As you recover and your food intake increases, we then concentrate on the nutritional foundation that will support you for the rest of your life. " I knew a lady locally that had the surgery, and after 6 months started having problems with hair loss and her doctor started her on protein drinks, but she has a different doctor. I'm wondering why there is such a vast difference in what the doctors think we should be eating? I do know the 3 surgeons in the group from here, have done extensive reporting. They continue to get input. Joan C, Calif. Guest guest
Joan, I am wondering the same thing. It varies here in the same city from doctor to doctor. Makes no sense! Guest guest
My best friend and I had our surgeries done the same day. She isn't following what the dr. told her either. We are supposed to puree our food for 8 weeks, she hasn't done it at all. She eats out every night, greasy foods. She hasn't lost in 2 weeks and can't figure out why. She wont' even exercise. What I can't figure out is why spend the money to have this done, if your not going to follow directions and do what were told. Pam
Guest guest
I think we were 2 weeks post op and she was eating subway. We aren't supposed to have bread until our 8 weeks is up. Fired fish and all...I have been a good girl and eat my proteins. I may not always puree my foods, but I don't cheat. I try and exercise everyday also. I have a health walker and do that every morning. I want to go to the health spa next week. I am 5 weeks out and have lost 26, to me it seems to come off slow, but if I can do that every month I will be happy. Pam

Guest guest
Kerri, My doctor doesn't require protein drinks either (although because I don't feel I'm getting enough in I'm going to start them). I don't think that one has to do with the other as far as how much you loose. As long as you're getting protein in through food. I am 24 weeks out as of yesterday and down 127 lbs. I think I've done okay. I believe it depends on several things, first, if you're getting protein in (through food or otherwise), then the rate of loosing could also depend on how much you had to loose to begin with. People (like myself) who had more to loose will loose at a faster rate than someone who didn't have as much to loose. Then of course there's the amount of exercise you do as well. That helps so much at least with me. I have a friend who had surgery 1 year and 2 months before I did and she has only lost 75 lbs. because she doesn't exercise--well she doesn't follow her diet correctly either but even in the beginning when she did she never exercised unless I drug her out of her house to go with me (after I had my surgery). You must make your own choices with regards to everything that is associated with this surgery. Yes doctors do know a lot and you need to follow their advice, but if there is something else that you'd like to try because you think it would help...then by all means go for it. And by the way, I think 40 lbs in 2 months is pretty fantabulous!!! When would you have been able to do that before?? T. Guest guest
Pam, That's what I feel like asking my friend too but she won't listen. At 2 weeks out after her surgery she was eating pizza and all kinds of stuff. I remember once that my hubby drove her hubby to pick up their dinner (2 extra large pizzas for 2 adults and 2 kids under the age of 7) and Nick (my dh) asked (her's) why they were getting 2 pizzas.... said, " Well, the kids will share half of one and Mel and I will eat the rest. " Nick said he thought that it was an obsessive amount of food for them....I tended to agree but we both kept our mouths shut.

Guest guest
You're doing great! Keep it up! I think that some people tend to think that now they've had the surgery they shouldn't have to work for the weight to come off and it just doesn't work that way. For the rest of our lives we're going to have to be self conscious of what we eat and drink and how we're eating and drinking and some people just don't see it that way. Whatever floats their boat I say but I'm doing what I want to do and I want to lose this weight so I'm doing what needs to be done in order to accomplish that. T.
