The duodenal switch is the same surgery as the RNY, with the exception of shorter intestine and smaller pouch. From what I've read, duodenal causes much more diahrea after you've eaten. This is absolutely not true. There are several things about the duodenal switch that are vastly different than the RNY. With the duodenal switch, 75% of your stomach is removed from your body, leaving you with a stomach 25% of what you had before. The duodenal switch leaves your pyloric valve in tact. With the RNY, your pyloric valve is no longer functional. We, with the RNY, don't absorb fats anymore (at least not in the first 18 months or so). With the DS, it's the fats that cause the diarrhea. There is much less chance of regaining weight with the DS. The malabsorption is worse with the DS. There are many differences between the two surgeries. When you speak of the 'shorter intestine', I'm thinking you're confusing a distal procedure with a proximal or something like that because both of those refer to length of intestine bypassed. The DS is a very different surgery. live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt...
