Guest guest
Before I put this in...I want to add my disclaimer that I don't advocate drinking juices as they are high in sugar. I believe in eating the fruit. That said, I will put in an article that I read in yesterday's Seattle Times under the People's Pharmacy. I thought it might be of use, and I thought of in particular with her high iron count. Here goes: Dark Juices Shown to Block Iron Absorption By Joe Graedon and Graedon, PH.D Syndicated columnists Q: I recently heard a snippet of a medical news segment about effects of dark-colored fruit juices like grape or cranberry on iron absorption. I regularly drink cranberry juice and am also being watched for hemochromatosis. A: The story can be traced to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (Nov. 5, 2002). Scientists discovered that antioxidant compounds in dark juices such as red grape and prune block absorption of iron. Light-colored juices like pear, apple, grapefruit, orange and white grape increase iron absorption. Hemochromatosis is a condition in which excess iron builds up in the body and damages organs. For people such as yourself, limiting iron absorption is desirable. Tea also prevents iron absorption. Unfortunately, the scientists did not study cranberry juice. Prior to WLS I had problems with my iron being too high. Used to give blood just to keep it below 16. My Mom and Grandma had the same problem. I couldn't even take prenatals because the iron in them would make mine soar and I would get serious migraines!! When I hemorraghed (sp) with my last kid my iron went down to 6.(something). The Doc wanted to transfuse me, said it would take at least a year of SERIOUS iron supplements to get me back to normal.....the midwife said NO-WAY, you'll kill her........the midwife was right.....at my 6 week post visit I was already back at 12......with no supplementation. I am really hoping I get to avoid that one problem post-op!!!!! P. Iron Absorption Before I put this in...I want to add my disclaimer that I don't advocate drinking juices as they are high in sugar.
