" name some things you found out as a postie that you wish you knew as a pre-op. "

too many to name here, haha. needing a recliner is the one that really sticks

out right now.

I wish someone would have told me that the barium you drink when you

have the upper GI test, will leave a white, chalky film all over

your mouth. The folks doing the test let me walk out of there and

down the hall with it all over my mouth. I looked like I was in one

of those " got milk " ads, but worse! That's the only thing I can

think of, except that the barium before and after surgery tastes

really really bad! My husband had his surgery before me and threw

up after drinking the barium for his swallow test. Before my

swallow test, I had the nurse give me something for nausea and I

kept it down.

Bring some of the gel-type hand sanitizer (like Purel) to the hospital with

you because you can not wash your hands with soap under running water while

you have an IV in one of them. And, you will have an IV the whole time you

are in the hospital. Also, tongs and baby wipes are great for clean ups

after a BM. Another thing that helped me was to bring a CD player and some

soothing CDs to listen to so I was less bothered by the typical hospital

noises. Having a recliner at home was helpful. I covered mine with a sheet

so it was extra soft. They are expensive, so if you don't have one, you

might try to borrow one or check out consignment stores or furniture rental

stores. You will only need it a month or so.

Oh, I forgot to add that I was given a large teddy bear that fit across my

tummy perfectly. I called it my cough and brace bear, and it worked

perfectly to brace my muscles when I had to cough to expand my lungs and to

protect against bumps on the way home. Every time my friend say me clutch

the bear, she slowed down! JoAnne
