Guest guest
Hello! My surgery is scheduled for Dec 4th and we have plans to travel from here, California, to Birmingham, AL for Christmas on the 23rd of Dec. Is it safe for me to be traveling by plane so soon after surgery? My main concern is blood clots. Its about 5 hours from LAX to Atlanta and then another hour or so to Birmingham after a short plane switch. Should I be requesting a blood thinner or compression stockings? What should I do? I could stay home but then I would spend Christmas and a week by myself. Im not sure if thats a dumber thing to do. Any ideas? My sister has deep vein thrombosis and I see the hell it has caused her- I would prefer NOT to go through that! Please advise!!! Guest guest
Hi Greer - Be careful with this one. Everything I read pre- and post-op in regards to plane travel is DON'T DO IT for at least one month after surgery. Check with your doctor to be sure. Good Luck with your surgery and Merry Christmas! Guest guest
Greer, I'm not a doctor certainly, but after 19 days it seems like you should be o.k. I've seen exercises that you can do with your legs and feet during a plane trip or car trip. It might be advisable though to just call the doctor's office and ask them. You don't need an appt., just give them a call. I had other concerns, and called twice prior to surgery, and felt relieved with the answers. Joan C, Calif.
