I saw Dr. Laveman for my daughter when she was 3. He was TERRIBLE!

I highly suggest Dr. Agin. Well worth the money and wait. I wish

CHERAB would take him off their website! He was the most

insensitive, obnoxious man I have ever met. I have seen a lot of

developmental peds and neurologists. He ranks as the worst by far

in my book. Also ~ his office was covered with pharmaceutical

paraphanilia. When I was there a mother called, who's son was a

patient of his, and was threatening to commit suicide. He refused

to take the call and told the secretary to tell her to take him to

the ER. Then he began to disclose personal info to me about this

poor patient. HORRIFIC is all I can say!!!

I believe his first name is Larry. We saw him once and never went

back. He was odd and unhelpful. We prefer Dr. Rose Merola, who we saw

at the Children's Specialized Hospital Outpatient Center in Hamilton,

NJ. She sees patients elsewhere as well. Someone told me that she

worked with Dr. Agin in the past, but I have no direct information on

that score. She is open to biomedical interventions and was supportive

of the choices we have made thus far, including fish oil and vitamin

E. An acquaintance took both of her sons to her as well, and she was

raving about how she figured out their problems when no one else

could. We were less challenging, as we knew what was up before we saw

her.

I agree with your assessment, and I forgot to say one other thing in

my previous post. He did not do a report or even call to follow up

on lab work he ordered. Dr. Merola gave me a very professional

report that summed everything up for me and for anyone I want to pass

it along to.

Not sure where I got from :) I definitley don't want to waste my time

with a specialist who might not be helpful. I can't believe he's on the Cherab

website and according to another post he doesn't even believe in developmental

apraxia! I will look into Dr. Merola so thank you for all your help.

If anyone has any other developmental pediatricians in NJ they would recommend

please let me know.

My son goes to Dr. Abba Cargan in Mountainside, NJ He is a wonderful

neurologist that we have been seeing for 2 years. He takes his time with my

son and

thoroughly evaluates him each time we visit which is usually once a year

unless I need him before that. He always calls me back when I have questions

about anything. We really like him, he's very familiar with Apraxia and also

isn't quick to give children a " label " . I live in Lake Hopatcong NJ and it

takes me about 30/40 minutes to get to his office. Dana (mom to age 5

moderate oral/verbal apraxia, dysgraphia, and hypotonia.

I would not recommend him either. We saw him 3 times and the 3rd time we walked

out of his office. He has no consideration of people's time. We always waited

way too long for him to see us and once we were in his office he took a call

that came in on his cell phone. I had to keep fighting my son to stay in the

room while he just talked away on the phone. After 15 rude minutes of this, I

had had enough and walked out.

We love Dr Abba Cargan too, but he is a pediatric neurologist, not a

neuro-developmental pediatrician (which is what I think the previous

poster asked for). You will have very different experiences meeting

with each kind of doctor, so it's important to know going in what

you're looking for.

We too would recommend Dr Marilyn Agin, in NYC, as a neuro-dev ped,

but you should know that it's almost impossible to get in to see

her. You can get an appt with her associate, Dr Govind, whom we

have seen also, but even then it takes about 7-8 months (or at least

did last time I tried!).

Of course, it took even longer to get in to Cargan! But at least it

is possible...with some doctors (esp those at CHOP) you can wait 2

years for an appt!

Good luck. Where in NJ do you live? I belong to a special needs

listserv for folks who live in and around Princeton, so if you're

looking for specialists nearby here, let me know.

(Princeton Junction, NJ)

Thanks . I made an appointment with Dr Cargan after you and Dana

recommended him. I live in West New York so it's pretty close by. He's booked

until December! I figure at that point he'll be over 2 so it will be a good

time for an evaluation. My new SLP feels pretty ceratin that my son will end

up with an apraxia diagnosis. We are going to see a developmental pediatrician

at Hackensack Hospital in June. Is Dr. Cargan a good doctor to see for apraxia?

I'm also making an appointment with Dr. Agin for November. Thanks!
