Guest guest
I don't think this is a bad discussion. It has been quite informative actually. This is how we learn. I " can " throw up, (as many of us can and do) so the original post about throwing up causing tooth loss because of stomach acid got me to start wondering about this. It has been a very good discussion!! As for Doc's saying things that aren't exactly right...My sister is in the pre-op stages right now, and since she is disabled, I drive her to all her appointments and stay with her. Last night we went to a pre-nutrition meeting with a dietician. I have a sore tongue from biting it all night to shut up. She actually tells new post-ops to make up a protein shake and sip on it all day long. Ewwww. Think of the bacteria going into that new pouch! She said lots of other stuff that wasn't right also, but......since it is not " my " meeting, I had to just shut up. Anyone who wanted to talk to me privately though...I did tell the truth to. I'll give her one thing...she did get the calcium citrate rather than calcium carbonate right. She was young...probably not out of school long...not a WLS patient, so what does she really know except what she has learned about normies in school. It is really really good for all of us to be on these lists so we can find out what really works. Chrissie shihtzumom@... http://users.snip.net/~shihtzumom My WLS Journey: http://millennium.fortunecity.com/doddington/691/WLS/this_is_me.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: nancy pugliese EXACTLY......sorry if you took my statement as a blanket statement.....nothing I have said was intended as such. It was exactly the point that I was trying to make....that noone can say " my doctor didn't say so, so obviously we don't need to. " I listened to everything my physician said...questioned it, read and prayed....then did what I thought sounded/felt right. I guess because I paraphrased it the way my Doc said it..... " All WLS patients will have to take acid reducers for life! " ,it sounded as though " I " was making a blanket statement..I guess I never really stopped to question that there might be other Doc's out there who don't.........well, I guess we can chalk this one up there with the " protein, water, aspartame etc debates.........sorry folks....didn't mean to start anything nancy p. Guest guest
Well, thanks. I wish it had a picture of what he's talking about. I'm on a mission now to get all my hospital records (and my mother's too, at her request). Unfortunately, the surgeon who did our surgeries is now retired, but I can pester the hospital to death. And I think I can track the doctor down and find out where his files are, as well. Guest guest
You can find some pictures of the original Mason bypass and subsequent revisions up to the RNY here... http://www.asbs.org/html/story/chapter4.html Hope this helps. Guest guest
Well, then I guess after all these years I’m lucky that my teeth are the only real victim here. :-) Jac mailto:jholdaway@... http://www.pictureitdigitaldesigns.com/ http://members.cox.net/xxxfarmpaints
Guest guest
I have ben doing a little research on this subject and found the below article. It is quite technical, but I have quoted one part. This pertains to the RNY..... I got it from http://www.obesitysurgery.com/ Obesity Surgery, 12, 399-403 Does Reduction in Gastric Acid Secretion in Bariatric Surgery Increase Diet-Induced Thermogenesis? s, MD, FACS;1 Emmanuel Kampitakis, MD;1 Schoretsanitis, MD;1 Mouzas MD;2 Elias Kouroumalis, MD;2 Demetrios D. Tsiftsis, MD, FACS1 Departments of 1Surgical Oncology and 2Gastroenterology, Heraklion University Hospital, University of Crete Medical School, Greece Almost to the end of the article it states this..... " Previous studies indicated that basal and post-pentagastric stimulation gastric acid secretion is virtually absent from the proximal gastric pouch of patients after RYGBP. Guest guest
Well, I finally broke down and called my original surgeon. I talked to his wife (the number I had was their home phone). The old fart was assisting in surgery and wasn’t home. LOL. She told me “thank goodness he has theses little extra jobs and he is OUT OF MY HAIR We have a farm now, and I can’t find anything for him to go mow right now!!” (The man has to be well into his 80’s.) He’s supposed to call me back. I hope if he’s still with it enough to be doing surgery, he can tell me something about my surgery. Guest guest
WOW Chrissie...you reminded me of an incedent I experienced several months post-op. My neighbor was getting surgery with a different surgeon than mine. She asked me to please go to her support group meeting. The topic was on constipation. The " specialist " that they had speaking that night was giving rather " stupid " suggestions if you ask me....all stuff for " normies " ......I finally piped up (in a room full of HUNDRED'S of people) and asked if it couldn't be cause by us having our intestines re-routed, can't remember exactly what I said as it was a couple of years ago, but I DO remember his answer.....in front of the whole group he laughed at me and said " WHAT???, there is no cutting involved in a gastric bypass, your intestines are still routed the same as mine!!! " and totally humiliated me!! I couldn't believe it........I just stood there stunned.....and not one person in that room dared rebuke this " holier than though so-called best specialist in Pgh!! " I have never gone back to another meeting.........I just use you guys The best specialist I know P. Re: acid reducer required after RnY? I don't think this is a bad discussion. Guest guest
Hi Chrissie.....OK, either I am not understanding this article (real possibility), or I just might need someone a little more " medically " inclined than myself to explain it. What I can't figure is.....WHY if there supposedly isn't any stomach acid, then why all the " acid reducers " and suctioning of stomach acids prior to testing........or am I reading this wrong.....meant to look up the names of the drugs....maybe I'll try and go back and do that now!!!!! Thanks, P. Re: Re: acid reducer required after rny? I have ben doing a little research on this subject and found the below article. It is quite technical, but I have quoted one part. Guest guest
From what I understand the Zantac and other antacids are to coat the stomach during healing to prevent ulcers and other irritation from food, etc while the pouch is healing. But, hey, I could be wrong too.
