That was pretty much my experience with the nutritionist at Dr. Weil's website.

I will try to contact him again. I think you're right, in that if enough people

write or phone, that eventually they will get the message. I respect Dr. Weil's

approach to vitamins and nutrition, in that he lets you know whether or not he

has solid evidence of why something will or won't work. If it hasn't been

scientifically proven, he will tell you right off, and if it has, he usually

gives you references.

Translation, please: what is " shiny " ? Light reflects off his bald pate? Or

like my daughter says (who has also met him) he " glows with good health and

enthusiasm " ?

Or what?

Precisely why I tend to trust the info he gives out. We can generally

extrapolate from it to apply in to post-ops. But I'd feel a lot more

comfortable if he'd address " our " issues at some point.

I think I've mentioned a number of times that I respect and trust this doc.

Grateful goes along with that, even if I didn't specifically spell out the

word.

But if " we " want more info, something done in the line of research and

studies on " us " then we need to be pro-active in pushing our interests and

concerns to anyone in the profession/industry, and maybe the media as well,

who will listen. That is the case with ANY " special interest " group. If " we "

just sit back quietly and wait for someone to take up the banner for us, it

will take a lot longer, maybe longer than any of our lifetimes. Just look at

the difference in time and money devoted to AIDS research and treatments vs

those for diabetes. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. I just think that if

someone as well-connected and respected as Dr. Weil would start asking for

studies, it might help get some of that needed research going for " us. " I am

in no way denigrating the fact that he just hasn't done it yet, but I

certainly intend to keep on nudging. I'm the Carol A in 's post about

" tenacious. "

This would be great, no doubt about it, but then stop and think about how

many special interest groups there are out there who have medically

different nutritional needs. He's need a team of researchers working on all

the various groups. People with Crohn's disease, people with this or that

rare form of cancer, people with HIV/AIDS, people with hepatitis, people

with an interminable range of allergies, people with history or risk of

ulcers, etc etc. We who have had the various weight loss surgeries are a

growing group, no doubt about it. But we are not the only ones out there

with special nutritional needs who would like them addressed by someone

trusted in his field like Dr. Weil. He is only human, and only has so many

hours in a day and so many resources to draw upon, so he has to address the

needs of normies first, and all the rest of us have to wait in line. Maybe

one of his students or associates would be willing to take up our cause and

do the research. I think it will be a long time, though, before we see these

things addressed. The experts in the field of bariatrics can't agree on

whether we do or do not absorb this or that nutrient, even after doing these

surgeries for years. I don't see that we can fault Dr. Weil for not being a

champion for bariatric patient nutrition -- at least he is doing solid work

with nutrition in general, for which we should be grateful.

I believe the best we can do is look around us at who is healthy, who is

keeping their labs up, and follow to the best of our ability what they are

doing. Lots of protein. The most absorbable vitamins we can find. Did I

mention lots of protein? And pay attention to the labs, and stay away from

what we know is bad for us.

Oh, I didn't mean to give the impression that you were putting down Dr.

Weil -- I've heard you speak well of him before. Sorry if my post came off

like that.

I just wonder if maybe someone as high-profile as he is has the time to look

into special groups. You're right, it would be WONDERFUL if someone like him

would even start talking about our needs. If we could get him to recognize

us, perhape he could point someone our way who could do the research and

give us some definitive guidelines.

Carol, with you on the job, no doubt he WILL hear about us, and often!

Thanks, Lyn. But, I doubt I can do the job alone. That's why I'm hoping lots

of people will read all this and take some time to write to him as well. Many

hands make the work lighter.

Good point! I've read a number of articles that he has written, but I've

never been to his website. I'll go check it out, and add my 2¢.
