12 years out, tooth loss and supps. Long.

This is a question I have about calcium and other supps. As I've stated before

my sister is about 11 years out distal RNY, my mom about 12 years out proximal

RNY. Both have maintained, however mom has gained some due to sugar, lot's of

sugar, but still not much for 12 years. When they had their RNY's it was a

relativley new procedure. Their surgeons told them there was no need for

anything but a multi vitamin. Neither have been compliant with that. My sister

has had a hard time with anemia, many blood transfusions. Both sister and mom

both had wonderful, beautiful teeth up until about 2 years ago. Now they are

missing teeth, and I don't mean back teeth, some of these are close to the

front, and you can see them when they speak. Scary. I wonder, is this just a

calcium issue? My mom's blood work is great, but she refuses to ask for a

dexascan. I know I need to be doin' my calcium citrate, it's sitting in there on

the cabinet, right by my beloved PB 55. I tried starting it back and after three

day's was so constipated I thought I had an impaction, it was terrible, that was

way over two weeks ago and my bowels are just now close to normal. This scares

me. I sure as hell don't wanna lose my teeth. I love my teeth.

Randy....it could possible be due to " vomiting " also! I have a friend who

is 6 years out from a distal RNY. Same thing, wonderful teeth but is now

having problems because she destroyed all the enamel from too much throwing

up. I am going to ask her just how much (frequency) she vomits! She said

this is exactly what her dentist told her was the cause. P.

I am confused. What does vomiting have to do with losing teeth after an RNY.

We no longer have the stomach acid to bring back up, only the food that was just

eaten.

Well, I have to tell you that you are mistaken about that. I lost ALL my

teeth, due to gastric reflux. Full set of false choppers, as of this year.

And I had surgery 21 years ago in May. You can call it dumping, reflux,

indigestion, whatever...it was still stomach acid, and it rotted my teeth.

Well, actually that is not true........we have much LESS stomach acid....but we

still have stomach acid. The reason that we still have to stay on some kind of

acid reducer for life post RNY is because the area where our intestines are sewn

to the new pouch is not used to stomach acid in that high of a

concentrate.......that is why you can develop ulcerations there........this is

how it was explained to me by my surgeon anyway...........HTH, P.

You know, I always wonder if it's due to the body trying to return to

normalcy. There are cases of a new stomach being formed from the

intestines, why not the pouch learning to produce stomach acid? I

get heartburn occasionally, but no reflux since my RNY, no idea why.

Well that one is news to me -- I've never taken an acid reducer since a few

weeks after surgery, and was never told I needed to. I don't have any

problems with reflux or heartburn, unless I do something stupid like drink

3-4 cups of regular coffee right in a row. This is the first time I've ever

heard we should have an acid reducer for life. Are we talking something OTC

like Pepcid, or scrip like Prevacid?

I think my doctor would have mentioned it, like he did the calcium and iron

and vitamins.

Well, personally I don't think I would ever give any one Doc this much

credit....if I listened to my surgeon I would still be taking two tums, a

flinstone a day and NO protein drinks.......I think it is one of those

things that not any one Doc is going to be totally knowledgable in this

field (unfortunately)......it is one of those things that you have to look

into for yourself and see if it sounds " reasonable " to you. Personally

(again, MHO) the fact that there are post-ops who do still experience reflux

shows us that there are at least some of us that still have stomach acid.

Because I cannot " see " or " feel " the area in question, seeing the meds for

it are soooo cheap, combined with my Doc's explanation, given the

consequence of NOT treating it, there not being any known or apparent

problems with long term treatment, personally KNOWING someone (WLS patient)

who has rotted their teeth from stomach acid.........all these things played

into my decision to treat........I think this decision making process is

what everyone should do..............JMMHO........ P.

Is there a difference between the surgery done 21 yrs ago and the RNY done now?

I'm just curious about this as it doesn't make sense to me based on what I

" thought " I knew about the RNY surgery. Now if you are not transected and have

a staple line disruption, then maybe stomach acid could come back up. But, how

else? I'm not disagreeing with you, just trying to understand this, if it is

correct.

Hmmm. My doc only has us on Zantac for maybe 6 months while the pouch is

healing. So, you are saying that the little 1-2 ounce top section that the

pouch is made from makes stomach acid?

Yes... " normally " routed bulimics get this. But how can a transected RNY patient

get this, without stomach acid? Isn't the lack of stomach acid and enzymes, etc

the reason we don't absorb many vitamins, including B-12 tabs?

Well, that is what I was told.......that it doesn't make " as much " .......I never

really thought about it much as I will have to take meds the rest of my life

anyway (both parents died of espophagual cancer).......but I am going to see if

I can do some research on it.......this has become a lively discussion, wouldn't

you say :) P.
