Curious about SSI benefits for Apraxia?

I realize that autistic children are considered disabled and can

qualify for SSI under this disability. Has anyone found this to be

true for children with Apraxia? Although I can get some therapy

through the school, I know it isn't going to be sufficient. I

homeschool all of my children so I don't worry about her being a

little behind in reading or other courses later on. My typical

children work on different grade levels in different courses which is

normal for a lot of homeschoolers. Our insurance doesn't cap our

therapy but that's because we have an enourmous deductible and a

percentage co-pay. We will be broke just trying to provide basic

therapy for our child. I have the link for the SSI and I'm wanting to

know if any of you have gone this route? It is a tremendous

encouragement to read about older children with apraxia and how well

they are doing and where their skills are. I appreciate it.

Blessings,

Tara Ebert

We applied for SSI and were denied. People say you will get denied

the first try but to try try again. We have been denied several

times. SSI is for very low income families. The parents income ocunts

as assets for the child. We make $70/month too much to qualify.

In PA, the child can get medical assistance regardless of the parents

income through the " loophole " . If the disability qualifies for SSI,

the child is eligible. I don't know if apraxia qualifies since my

son qualified on another diagnosis.

Sorry you were denied SSI. Speech therapy is expensive but Dr. Fein at

United Testing Service in Miami might be able to help you. He provides a

cost efficient ($95 a month) web based speech therapy program. If the

program is appropriate for your child he will customize the program for you

based on your child's needs. You will be able to access the program daily

via the Internet. Dr. Fein's number is 800-780-5554.

Kayce,

I don't know if it is 2 cars that is the problem, or the appraisal value of the

cars, but you could always get your cars reappraised by a dealer so that they

aren't using their idea of your cars' value to determine benefits

eligibility....I know someone that was denied food stamps and medical benefits,

but when the case worker used the blue book for appraisal for determining her

eligibility, she went to the dealer and got her truck reappraised with a signed

letter, they had to count the reappraisal, and gave her the benefits:) I don't

know if that would work for SSI..we couldn't qualify because my husband makes

too much, but that is just a creative solution....

hi- the vehicle does not count if it is used for a business like a home

based business like childcare and the interest is also tax deductible if you use

it to transport kids, training and trips to the grocery store-that's

creative-charlotte
