Hi Again;

Since I've never, even after surgery, paid much attention to carbs -

what is the rule of thumb with them?

What Veggies are high in carbs? I love squash and brussle sprouts,

go through phases when I want a lot of salads. Baked and mashed

potatos -- Yumm...

Can someone advise a Guide for DUMMIES regarding Carbs :)

Hey Becky,

I'm not aware of any set carb rules and I think most of us have eventually

sort of just worked out for our self what does work and what doesn't work...

I'll share some of my own personal rules about carbs and what I based my own

rules on.

1.) Carbs are sugar, sugar is a carb

2.) Our bodies require some carbs

3.) There is a WIDE range of carbs to choose from

4.) The most studies and easy indicators I could find about " carb / sugar /

rules " were those available to diabetic's... they use the carbs that take

the longest to break down to sugars (I hope my carbs get past the absorption

point before they break down to pure sugars but don't know for sure or not

so I use the slowest acting ones.)

5.) NOTHING white -- white carbs = starches = breaks down to sugar really

fast = gains weight = NOTHING white (no potato's, no white bread, no pastas,

no white rice... all that white food)

6.) Yum sautéed veggies -- green beans, squash, asparagus, (salads when I

need to loosen my BM) I love spinach but it HATES me :-( but I still think

it is a good carb for others.

7.) I color code food just to make it easy on myself (who has time to

" think " about every food???) Green is best, variations of green, yellow but

nothing orange or white. Red in moderation. This is for veggie carbs. Fruit

carbs are different.

Fruit -- eat as if eating candy in the old days -- in moderation and what

doesn't hurt your tummy and we are each different so you just have to play

with it. I eat some watermelon, green grapes, some apple and tangolas when

in season because I just can't stop myself but if you can avoid them, do.

They are my weak point :-( *sigh* The sugar (fructose) in fruit is usually

broken down really quickly so moderation is the key. Once or twice a week in

MEASURED (for me no more than 1//2 a cup) amounts.

How to " measure food " easily -- go to discount store and buy those fake

Tupperware 4 oz containers -- use them for your dish or your " holding "

container and it is auto-measured based on the size of the dish. Example,

take out 4 oz container, fill it up with grapes and let yourself know that

you can eat it all at once or you can spread it over a couple of days...

your choice.

I do believe the most important RULE that we all should learn is

moderation -- nothing is going to hurt us more than gluttony (besides the

emotional pain -- physical pain comes with too much of anything.)

We should try to balance our chosen diets and have some of everything but

the difference now is we try to get the most healthy foods in first and if

we have room left we can have a few grapes, a couple of slices of apple or

all the pickles in the world you want (dill, no sugars) a " non " food though.

Get your protein in first... if you are " starving " make yourself drink a

protein shake FIRST, wait 20 minutes and see how starving you are then...

then make the food choices when you are NOT starving. Don't make food

choices when you are really hungry... most of us don't choose wise if we are

really hungry.

If you use the 4 oz containers with lids you can store left-overs for meals

the next day ~smile~ If you made some yummy mashed potato's then taste 1

bite -- the 5th bite will taste the same as the first bite so all you need

is the first bite to check on the taste right? DO NOT do that when your

hungry... do it after you've eaten your healthy choices and are full.

For me, if I am " craving " a bad food choice -- and the craving won't go

away I might as well eat some of it AFTER I am full... the cravings for me

seem to NOT go away but only get worse if I deny myself that food totally --

so -- after you eat and your full... have some of what you are craving and

it will usually be plenty to make that craving go away.

I have no basis for what I just shared that " I " do for me -- most all my

choices are heart healthy because my heart is my issue health wise but I

also want to be balanced so I choose from the balanced choices of heart

healthy choice stuff.

Do I screw up (see posts from May-Aug this past year) can I fix it if I pic

k up my tool and use it? (see posts from end of Aug-Dec this year)

No one is perfect but we can make things as easy as possible for ourselves.

hugz,

you see, I am a potato addict. Not sour cream, not bacon bits, not

butter..just potato. I often nuke or boil a potato and just eat it with salt

and pepper (or Morton's Nature's Seasoning, my seasoning of choice). Nothing

else. I eat the skins, and I think it helps with keeping my fiber intake up.

After reading the Adkins carb counter book long ago, I decided I was

justified in hating broccoli and brussels sprouts. Lettuce and

cabbage are next to nothing in carbs but I find that more than a very

small serving (bread plate size) of salad causes me to get the

galloping trots. My doctor says I don't tolerate the fiber. I don't

know whether that is the rule for every distal RNY patient or it has

to do with my " short gut syndrome " because of the additional

intestine I lost after my bowel obstruction. No matter, too much

veggy fiber and I run don't walk to the toilet.

If it makes you feel any better, some of us have had virtually all of our

intestine bypassed and *still* have problems losing the weight, much less

keeping it on!!

(eating a big freaking salad which will NOT give me the runs and still wishing

for fritos and doughnuts)
