Guest guest
Hi. My name is Holly, I am 36 and live in Iowa. I have been searching the internet for advice on post op diets for RNY. I had my surgery 6 weeks ago yesterday,(250 lbs and 5'4 " ) and have lost 40 pounds already, which is great, but I know so little about how to continue the weight loss, and learning how to eat with my new stomach. My surgeon is a personal friend of mine, who I trust with my life. He has done less than 20 RNYs and as such has very little information for post op. I am so hoping that those of you who have went through this can give me some advice or recommendations for sites, etc. that will help me with learning HOW to eat. Right now, I do alot of soups, and soft foods, even though I can technically eat anything. I've gotten in the habit of eating chips and salsa, because the salsa seems to satisfy my " hunger " that is left in my mouth long after my stomach is full! But I don't understand some things because last week I ate less than a 1/4 cup of sizzling rice soup, and became so uncomfortable about half an hour later. Someone said that the rice still swells in the stomach, which caused alot of pressure and pain in my new stomach, basically very high in my abdomen. I know there is the possibility of stretching or maybe tearing the surgery. This is what I need - LOTS of advice. I've been watching this board for a couple weeks now, and I've learned lots from you. For those of you that haven't went through this yet, let me say that I would do it again in a heartbeat. It is major surgery, but I was so lucky with mine and had no problems. I wish you all good luck! I so appreciate any advice you could give me! Thanks, Holly
Guest guest
Hi Holly, it's too bad that you didn't get much instruction. Every doc is different in what they advise---I will tell you what I have been told, and what I have picked up from this site and others. Protein is king.....you need to eat this first and foremost. Right now I'm eating no starches (potatoes, rice, pasta, yes, and chips), just meat/chicken/fish, etc., and then a few bites of crunchy vegetables at the end. I have a protein shake for breakfast. If you don't eat enough protein, you will lose more lean body mass and less fat, and you will be more likely to lose some of your hair. Most of us also take iron and calcium supplements and vitamins. You might also read the " Pouch Rules for Dummies " in the " files " section of this website. If you have any more questions, feel free to email me. Connie open rny 9/17/03 293/245/170 > Hi.
