Guest guest
My weight has slowly upped 16 pounds from my lowest figure of a year ago and is due to " grazing " and not exercising. This past week I started with the almost no carb and high protein eating. Now I am having problem with constipation big-time... is this a problem for anyone here? Happens to me every time I go too drastically low-carb. You need the green leafy veggies or some other high-fiber foods to keep the all-protein from shutting down your system. I mix some flax seed meal into something I eat (even a protein shake) every day, and that helps keep me regular. Also make sure you are REALLY faithful to keeping your water intake up. ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
Actually going low-carb can effect people in one of two ways....I have a hard time (no pun intended) of it for the first couple of days, and hubby has the opposite problem. A couple of " stool softeners " should help for the first few days!! HTH, P. Wal-Mart's house brand " Equate " is the equivalent of Colace, the most often recommended by doctors, and is only about $3-4 a bottle. I take 3 a day and it works fine for me. They are not like laxatives, don't create a dependency. Also, make sure you're getting plenty of water. Carol A
Guest guest
Won't it work just as well and be healthier to eat leafy greens and whole fruits? I'm not sure I'm on target with this, but I'll tell what I think and anyone who has more knowledge can pipe in. I try to eat whole foods. No juices, whole fruits. I especially love frozen berries as snacks, papaya, pineapple, grapes, apples, pears.. All high fiber. I also try everyday to eat a leafy green. I mean a dark green like spinach, collards, kale, broccoli, etc. In the absence of that, squash , cauliflower, etc. If I eat bread, I make sure it's high fiber, low sugar about 100 cal/slice. When I eat cottage cheese or yogurt I sprinkle on a little all bran. Last night I made spaghetti, quick style w/ Ragu and hamburger meat. But I threw in one onion, one green pepper, one carrot, one zuchinni, a few mushrooms and a handful of spinach. No extra calories to speak of there, but lots of vitamins and fiber. This seems to keep me ticking like a clock, plus it gives me all the iron and vitamins I need, and, most importantly, keeps me satisfied. It's a small difference in eating patterns, but it has really worked for me. I used to have terribly swollen ankles and wrists, and sometimes eyelids, every morning. Since I've switched to whole foods where possible and incorporated fiber naturally, the swelling is totally gone, I don't feel bloated and I have an appointment every morning. By the way, some of my experiments with trying new foods don't go over too well. I made, what I thought, was a yummy stuffed acorn squash and the family wouldn't eat it. Ditto with a fresh pear and blackberry cobbler I made two days ago. They both tasted great. I loved it. The dogs loved it, too. Sometimes it takes a bit of work to get the family on board with trying new things too. Guest guest
I'm with Vicki on this one. I got to taking one form or another of laxative / stool softener too often, and even though you aren't physically addicted, your body gets used to this and starts to need it. I have added flax seed meal to my daily diet (has those gream Omega-3's in it too) a tablespoon in some whole-grain cereal, sometimes even in my protein shake, and I eat salad at LEAST once a day, and no longer have the constipation problems. Eating a lot of protein and drinking my shakes regularly will " stop me up " too, but by eating as many veggies as I can, I counteract the problem (New favorite healthy junk started this fall -- cut an acorn squash in half, remove the seeds, pop in microwave 7-10 minutes, then drizzle on a little sugar free syrup (Log Cabin & DaVinci both make it with Splenda, or sprinkle on some Brown SugarLike, and eat right out of the shell -- definitely keeps me regular, and it's full of good vitamins and almost no calories!) > Won't it work just as well and be healthier to eat leafy greens and > whole fruits? Guest guest
weeel, it depends. How's your protein levels? My albumin levels dropped -- I am almost 3 years out and medial, and was pregnant and am now nursing. For me protein helps with carb cravings and keeps me on an even keel. I can't wait to see what happens when I get more in... JJ. In a message dated 3/10/03 3:53:05 PM Eastern Standard Time, soshbfly@... writes: > I'm concerned about all the protein talk. Guest guest
I actually don't know what my levels are right now... but I'm going to get some bloodwork done within the next week and that will be one of the things I check. Someone at work, ironically enough, brought up a book " Carb Addicts Handbook " . He doesn't have a clue about my surgery or anything, but he sits near me and notices what I eat I'm seriously considering getting back on the shakes - even if it helps me curb my wanting carbs (I'm not really a sweet-eater, but I do like pretzels, Chinese Food, bagels, etc.) I'm also concerned about my blood sugar levels - I get severe drops if I eat anything (and I mean ANYTHING) with sugar before lunchtime. Its scary because I get dizzy, forgetful, and shaky. Definitely want to check that out! -- RNY 3/20/00 DreamofRunning@... wrote: > weeel, it depends. > How's your protein levels?
