weight loss....then gain...HELP!

This is my first post to the board. I've been lurking in the shadows

since about August always just reading posts now and then. But now I

have run into a VERY big problem. I had an open RNY on August 28,

2003. At my two week appt I had lost 16 pounds and it seems that I am

losing weight really slow ever since then. I started at 265 and

actually got down to 224. Now here's the problem....this early out I

have already hit stopping points and even have gained some back. I am

back up to 230 and really getting scared. I have to admit that I

haven't stuck to strictly protein and water. I gained when I decided

to cheat and have some carbs like lo mein noodles and crackers with

some vegetable soup and such. But in no way have I overate. I don't

understand why that little bit of something different caused this. So

how are you people that are losing so rapidly and doing so wonderful

actually doing this? Does it take having only protein and water? I'm

so disgusted and ashamed. I feel like I'm failing even at the one

thing everybody else is succeding at. So please some pointers here!!!

And what are you eating besides shakes and meat to get your protein

and in what amounts? I really need some help.

First I will say that every surgeon gives different instructions

regarding what to eat postsurgery, how often, and how much. So I

would suggest talking with you surgeon and/or your dietitian.

I can only share my own experience with you and I have not had a gain

such as yours since my open rny on 9/17/03. I do stick pretty

closely to protein and water---I'm able to eat about 2-1/2 ounces of

meat at lunch and dinner followed by a few bites of crunchy veggies.

For breakfast I do have a protein shake. I avoid liquids with meals

(including soups) and all carbs (rice, potatoes, pasta, bread,

etc.). I exercise regularly. I take the required vitamins and

minerals religiously.

Don't get overburdened with guilt and shame. Continue to educate

yourself and discuss your concerns with your doc.

Hi Debbie

Gaining the 6 pounds could be from alot of things. Are you close to

starting your period? I find when I am a day or two away I suddenly gain

4-5 pounds. It's all water and will come right back off when your period is

over. More than likely you are retaining water for some reason. Try

increasing your water intake and upping the exercise a bit. I doubt

seriously that you gained real weight.

As for my diet....

I try to eat as wide a variety of things as possible. I eat (everything in

quantities of 1/4 cup or less) cottage cheese or yogurt for breakfast.

Occasionally I have a small amount of special K cereal.

Lunch I eat Tuna, soup, salad with chicken or shrimp, cheese and cracker

.....stuff like that.

At dinner I eat whatever I cook for the family (just a small portion) but I

go with the meat (chicken, fish, beef) and some vegs.

I rarely eat carbs at all. My stomach does not like them anymore and I tend

to have pain when I attempt anything like bread, rice, pasta if I have more

than 2 baby spoons of them. So now I just skip them for the most part.

For snacks I keep a supply of Sugar Free Popsicles or I occasionally have a

glass of V-8 juice.

Publix light house brand has the highest protein, 11g. Plus it is often the

least expensive and it tastes great. If you are having a hard time getting

enough protein, add some unflavored protein powder to the yogurt.

Debby, most likely this just water weight fluctuation. Don't worry

unless you know you are grazing all day and overeating. Even in my

early months, it was common for me to plateau for weeks at a time and

bounce around in weight just like you.
