Guest guest
I would def do the regular preschool. Challenge your child to keep up with their peers. The special ed classrooms are a downward spiral in my opinion. Once in there it is very very difficult to get out. They are about 6-8 mo behind in the curriculum. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of vakinderegg Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2007 1:52 AM Subject: [ ] 3 questions? Once again thanks for all your quick responses. 1. We had our 38 month old tested yesterday. This SLP gave her the Goldman-Fristoe . She did not give her thru the flip chart, but thru manipulatives and pictures we brought thru a list she gave us. I made a photo album of our daughter doing some of the things she asked to bring. Like our daughter jumping, swimming, taking a bath, sliding....This enabled our daughter to talk about herself and what she was doing. This was our second session with her . She did say she does not believe our daughter has apraxia, but phonological problems due to not hearing for so long. We got her PE tubes in March. She did say because of her cognitive, receptive, and social skills she should not go to pre-school special education in the Fall. She feels all she needs is 2x a week 30 minutes sessions with the school, 2x a week with our private therapist,OT 1x a week , and regular pre-school 3x a week. Our EI therapist keeps pushing us to put our daughter in the SPED class. Even the school says she does not qualify for the program, but if this is what I really want I can make a big stink and get her in. What would you do? We live overseas and I do not have many choices of English speaking pre-schools. All the pre-schools are on the military base.3x a week regular preschool, 2x a week sped(not sure what disabilities the children in the class have..I need to observe)or what the SLP who tested our daughter suggested? This therapist who tested our daughter is well respected in the overseas community. We do have an appointment with the Ped. Dev. doc at the end of August.I am going to ask for some blood work. 2. Did anyone know anything about Language cycling therapy? This was suggested that this is what we should ask our therapists to do with our daughter. 3. I have now changed our daughters Omegas to Nordic Naturals Omega 369 Junior liquid from the NN Omega 369 gel caps.I was giving her 4 gel caps before and now I am giving her 1/2 teaspoon. She loves this taste! She weighs about 30 pounds.....I know I have read all the posts about dosages but I get dizzy reading them. The bottle says over 5 years old and our daughter is 3. I believe this is a higher dose than the gel caps. None of this can be toxic if it is increased?????? What should be the limit? She loves the taste so much she would chug the entire bottle if I gave her the chance! Once again thanks

Guest guest
Hi, Stand back and take a 'hard' look at your daughter. Would she fit 'in' with the kids at regular pre-school? For Mark, during the preschool years, he would have been okay socially. Does she make playmates easily? Is she outgoing despite her issues? At this time, it is not whether she can keep up academicly, it is whether she will be accepted by her peers that you need to worry about. This can be tricky for a child with speech issues. Little children seem to be okay except when a child drools. At 3, no problem; at 6, big problems! My experience (which is all I have to give you) is this: we didn't have a problem keeping up academicly until handwriting issues held Mark back (lack of speed, etc.) until about grade 3. It was the social issues that were a problem and those didn't really manafest until about grade 1; had Mark not been a 'drooler', I don't think that it would have been a problem even then. Your choice of placement needs to be where your daughter will be 'happiest'. It is her emotional situation that needs tending by you and the school can 'test' all they want; you are the only one who can truly 'know' the answer here. If she gets into special education pre-school, then there is the possibility that she will get behind right off the bat since special ed. tends to teach at a slower pace. In addition, she might find that the other kids (if they are severely affected), really turn her off. Have you gone to both schools and have the opportunity to see the programs 'in action'? In addition, if she has a playmate that is in either program, it would go a long way to furthering her happiness. You will notice that I don't bring up anything to do with qualifications and such re the above.... her emotional well-being is really the crux of the matter. Disabilities can be overcome and conquored but damage to a child's self-esteem tends to 'stick' so you need to viciously and ferociously guard it. Janice [sPAM] [ ] 3 questions? Guest guest
We actually did both for Tyler, he was already at a regular preschool when we were offered the integrated preschool setting, so since each was 2-1/2 hours and I didn't want to pull him away from his friends, I did both. He would go to the regular school in the morning (three mornings a week in the beginning). I would pick him up, them we would go to the special ed school in the afternoon. He made such tremendous gains doing this, and received his therapies there, so I'm very happy we did it. Just something else to consider, it doesn't have to be either or. Guest guest
I couldn't disagree more! If your school district has a quality program in place, there is nothing better than an integrated preschool program. After two years of public preschool, my son no longer qualifies for services, he will be attending a mainstream kindergarten at a Catholic school, and his pre-reading skills are lightyears ahead of where my (typical) daughter's were at this age after a regular preschool. (And she's brilliant -- 99% on her Terra Nova's this year...) Not only was it NOT difficult to get out of special education, they basically kicked us out. My niece also went to a special education preschool through a private placement, and it was so awesome my sister tried to keep her there for elementary school. (Her district wouldn't do it, even though the tuition would have been cheaper than providing the services themselves. She has ongoing special education needs.) The question is really whether or not your district's program is adequate. That is hard to measure except in hindsight. I would ask everyone you know about it: parents, therapists, doctors. If the program stinks, it stinks. There's no getting around that. If you can do both schools, that's great, too. More is better at this age. in NJ > > I would def do the regular preschool. Guest guest
Thanks for your responses. I am so torn about what to do. We have our daughter enrolled in regular preschool. Unfortunately, since she is not potty trained completely yet we will not be able to move her to the 3 year old class....we stay with toddlers until she is potty trained....and then we wait for a slot. We lost our slot because of this potty issue! She seems to care one day and not the next. Promised her a big girl bed too! Right now she is scheduled to go to preschool 3x a week with all her friends from last school year and play group. If we decide to move to 2 day a week SPED preschool with regular preschool 3x a week I will need to observe the SPED class at different times or a complete morning or afternoon.I am a Sped teacher (taught over 20 years...just staying at home with our daughter while we live overseas) and I am so aware of the different types of disabilities that are in one classroom. I just want what is best for our daughter. Her social skills are good and kids request to play with her all the time. I think if she had more language she would be requesting playdate with friends. She plays with the children and the only difference is the language ability levels. I just wish there was a preschool here that works with kids that need phonology or articulation therapy. I know there are preschool in the states that zero in on apraxic and phonology delayed kids....mostly attached to big universities.I think my knowledge about disabilities scares me about what the future might hold since I taught children with disabilities from mild to severe for so many years. Yes, I was to challenge my child. She is the type of kid who is happy just being with children. I am not sure if 2 days a week of sped preschool will put her behind.....but I know about tracking and I do not want her sped tracked in elementary school.....and don't tell me the school don't do it...yes they do.I have been on the otherside of the table.Sorry I just vented..another sleepless night thinking about strategies! > > >I would def do the regular preschool. Guest guest
I don’t think it is so much the quality of the program but the types of disabilities in the program. My son has been in the ECSE classes since he was 2yrs 9 mo. He is not where my daughter was at age 4. He has picked up several weird behaviors from others in his class. He is an excellent imitator - I have him in a typical preschool this fall with his peers as well as the articulation class with the district. I am very pleased that we are not in the developmental delay classroom again. If I hadn’t pushed to get him out, he would still be in the class where he was not being intellectually challenged. My thought on this is If the kids do not have exposure to neuro typical kids; how are they going to learn which behaviors to emulate? _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of bigcheech91 Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2007 10:00 PM Subject: [ ] Re: 3 questions? Guest guest
Hi, I am also a military spouse.. (assuming you are). Have you thought about trying to find out if you can get transferred to CONUS ? I think you have a good case, if this is what you want for your daughter. Are you in the EFMP program? Let me know if you need more info.. Not sure if you already know about EFMP. I'll go into more detail if you need it.. but I don't want to write it all out if you already know all about it ) lol. good luck ~ ! Guest guest
, You are lucky to have a great placement for your child.I know lots of kids that just needed sped preschool.Your son was lucky to have great teachers , therapists...and you as a mom! Since we will only be here in Europe for 1 -2 years I want the best for my daughter. There is one preschool sped teacher that I respect and think she would be a great teacher for my daughter if I push for 2 1/2 day sessions. She is a SLP and preschool teacher. I would consider putting our daughter in her class only.I have known her for years. Not all preschools classes here work with kids with phonology problems, apraxia, or artic only kids. It seems they get drop in services. Usually 2 30 minute sessions a week. Unfortunately, all preschools and districts are not alike. There are days I wish we were back in Northern Virgina because I know the Sped programs there are excellent. There are classes for kids who have similiar issues as my daughter.I know the schools in NJ are excellent too. I am from Northern NJ. > > > > I would def do the regular preschool. Challenge your child to keep > up with > > their peers. Guest guest
, I agree with you. There are some kids with behaviors in the class that my daughter might imitate. Some of the children are in our playgroup so I know their behaviors. I am going to observe the class before making any decisions. Since a makeup of a class can change from year to year...especially on an overseas Army Base where soldiers and their families move around so much.On the bright side I have observed 2 of the children (autistic)who have behaviors that have changed so much this year while in Sped preschool. You have to have a trained eye to know they are autistic. A year ago both boys behaviors were very obvious. > > > > I would def do the regular preschool. Guest guest
There are lots of good speech programs that you can work at home with your child if that is the main issue. Our first SLP gave us a lot of homework from " Moving Across Syllables " , and I think that made a HUGE difference. A lot people use the Kaufman cards, but my son didn't really need those. There are also some software programs, but I am not knowledgeable on those. My point is, if the special ed. program does not suit you, there are still good, affordable options that can be done anywhere. > > > > > > I would def do the regular preschool. Guest guest
Hi! Yes, I know what EFMP is....our daughter has been with EDIS for 18 months. The SLP here thinks our daughter will be just fine before she gets to kindergarten. She has made big leaps and bounds recently. If we do not see a huge improvement with the DODDS therapists and our private therapist in the next 6 months we are going back to the states next summer.I work daily with our daughter. She is really trying to say her words more clearly! > > Hi, > > I am also a military spouse.. (assuming you are). Have you thought > about trying to find out if you can get transferred to CONUS ? Guest guest
, Is this the program you are talking about? http://www.superduperinc.com/P_Pages/pe9735.htm If so I just might order it. I like the idea it uses entire words than individual sounds bites. Thanks! > > > > > > > > I would def do the regular preschool. Challenge your child to > > keep > > > up with > > > > their peers.
