The hospital I stayed at wouldn't let me leave until I had a bm. Of

course, I lied about it because I wanted to go home but it happened that

same evening.

That all depends on the individual and the diet. I didnt' have a BM until a

week after the surgery at home. since I was only on full liquids I didnt' worry

about it, but it was ...uh.. a hard one.

I didn't have my first bowel movement until 2 weeks after the surgery. I

went back for drain removal at 2 weeks and I still had not gone. The doctor

told

me to take a laxative, but I went that night without taking it. Now I go

about once a week. The doctor said it is OK because I am not getting any fiber

in my diet (since I am on protein only). Since I have never gone on a daily

basis (I used to go only 1-2 times a week), this is " regular for me " . There

were no ruloes at my hospital that you had to go before you left. Hope this

helps

Hi Crystal:

My friend had her first bowel movement about five days after her

surgery... three days after she was home from the hospital. She was panicking

by day two, convinced she'd never have a bowel movement ever again. But her

doctor gently reminded her that the more she panicked, the more she inhibited

nature from running its course. Sure enough, as soon as she relaxed, nature

came calling.

Remember, everyone is different. So, your experience may not be the same.

When in doubt, ask your doctor.

BTW, there are no stupid questions on this list! So, always feel free to ask

whatever is on your mind.

Warmest Regards,

Barb
