Wow, I was about to introduce myself to the group when I saw this posting.

My roommate had gastric bypass surgery on Oct. 23 and I joined this group as a

way to gather information to help her through her recovery. You folks have been

a tremendous source of help, comfort, and inspiration.

Ironically, I am the Managing Editor of NBC6.net, the web site that published

the article linked below. My shift ended right before this news broke and this

was the first time I saw it.

To put things into perspective, however, everyone in this group is testament to

the success and value of gastric bypass surgery. One negative news story can

never erase all the positive experiences you all have mentioned.

I look forward to participating in your discussions and sharing my friend's

experiences as well. Who knows, if I can get her to stop being so shy about the

internet, she may even jump in from time to time. :-)

Warmest Regards,

Barb

Hey there guys,

I know some nurses have some inside news, and if its ok i would like

to hear the inside news, as i am going to school for nursing. I read

the memorial page yesterdsay on obesistyhelp.com and i was bawling

for awhile, and well i wasnt going to get it but a friend said its

only 2 percent and some of these people didnt die from the surgery.

She also said that you can either live with the weight or try to do

something about it, which made sense. Because what kind of life am i

living with this weight now, a very restrictive one...!

Hi Everyone,

I work here in Boston and today this was the story of the day here

pretty much. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family; they're

distraught. As for the story itself, there's more coming out about

how this happened to the doctor one other time during surgery, so

there's an investigation occurring. I'm not saying it's the doctors

fault but I'm glad the medical industry is investigating this so it

doesn't happen again. Apparently we've had 6 deaths in

Massachusetts in the past 18 months and what they said on the news

was this was a high number so that's why they're investigating. Not

all the deaths were at this one hospital but across the state.

There's a lot of other facts coming out now too, 1) this surgery

took over 8 hours to complete 2) the doctor left a 1/2 " gap opened

in her stomach, so she had a leak 3)her incisions weren't closed

completely. Again, this is what I heard on the news, not in any

article and it's not my opinion.

For all you Pre-Ops just remember why you're doing this and trust in

yourself and your surgeon. Yes, things do happen that we wish

wouldn't but you need to do what's best for you. I would still do

this surgery all over again, no questions asked. I had my surgery

done at Mass General Hospital here in Boston.

My prayers go out to Ann Marie's family. They said they want her to

have a voice and they wanted to share this story with others and

basically they want to find out why this occurred.
