Hi All,

I have my surgery date!!! It's 11/18/03. So soon!

For those of you with small children, how did you explain to them

that you would be in the hospital for 5 days? What did you tell them

about why you are having surgery?

I have a 4 year old & an 18 month old. The older is extremely

attached to me and is smart enough to somewhat understand what's

going on. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi ,

You and I are scheduled to have our surgeries on the same day. I too

have small children (7 and 3). My 7 year old has a few years on your

4 year old, but he knows why I am going to be in the hospital. My

husband and I sat down and explained to him that mommy was going to

be away for a few days and that I was having surgery to help make me

healthier. My family have all attended my Dr. appts. with me and

even though my 7 yr. old was playing his Game Boy, he took in alot of

the conversations. Of course when it comes down to the risks, we

protect him from that becuz he is a little young to understand and we

don't want to scare him, but he is aware of why I am having surgery.

Now my 3 year old, it's all above her head. I'm sure she will miss

me, but as long as she can visit and have her favorite foods, life is

good for her! Such innocence!

I'd say honesty is a good policy, but keep it on a 4 yr. old level,

don't make it to wordy and let him/her know that this will make you a

healthier mommy that will be able to run, jump, play and do other

things related to your kids that you may not have been able to do at

your current weight.

Children can be amazing in what they can understand, don't

underestimate the power of little minds.

Are you having your surgery open or lap? Barring complications your

hospital stay should be less than 5 days. Remember this is coming

from a Pre-Op ;o)

i have a four year old and an 8 year old, I explained to my 8 year

old the basics of what I was having done and that afterward she would

see my body change...I just told my four year old that I was going to

the hospital to get skinny, he got to stay with his na-na so he was

happy, after about the third day of me being gone, he called me and

said that I needed to come get him right now...all in all he adjusted

pretty good and he has been amazing in my recovery, when I need

something picked up off the floor...and my 8 year is learning to cook

b/c most of the time I still don't want to, so she helps her dad

cook...
